Better late to the party than never, I suppose... Singular Hummingbird up in the hills last Sunday. My favourite bike, without a shadow of a doubt.

    Single Speed Roll Call !!!

Well thank you - but you're much too kind ... It's just a 1995 Columbus Max Explosif with cable stops, canti bosses and mech hanger removed and hose guides and a disc caliper mount added. I'm using aTrickstuff Excentriker BB.

    Single Speed Roll Call !!!

Nothing fancy to see here, but of the bikes I own this has to be my all-time favourite. Nice winter weather for a change - now it's back to the usual rain and more rain.....

    Some Gearing Q's

Depends a lot on the kind of terrain you want to ride - if it's mostly rolling fireroads and singletrack then something like 34:16 or 32:16 will probably be as good a place as any to start. If you have lots of very steep and/or tricky climbs in your area or if you do a lot of technical nadgery...

    Single Speed Roll Call !!!

I'd love to see my wife's face (or maybe I wouldn't....) if I brought one of my bikes in the house in that condition .

    Magic gear vs tensioner

As above really, plus depending on the chainstay length and gearing you choose you might never be able to find a "magic ratio". Actually, I wouldn't bother faffing around stripping all the gearey stuff off your bike just to have a singlespeed for winter use. I'd build one up from scratch - if...

    gears to ss

Then maybe a singlespeed running 32:16 (or lower) wouldn't be ideal. It all depends on whether you're content to spin along on the road at 14mph (and at a cadence of about 120rpm !) or not. I rode one of my SS's to work and back the other day and that was about 8 miles each way. I wasn't in a...

    gears to ss

In my opinion, once you start to have two ratios available for road/off road then it's no longer single speed. The beauty of SS is the ultimate simplicity and that you have to do it all with one gear wherever you are - uphill downhill, fast and flowing or slow and technical. I run 32:19, and...

whats a solid front fork for me to upgrade to?

Yep, 1 1/8th inch headset size. For forks, consider some of the lower end Magura stuff (Asgard, Vidar). Great build quality and reliable - underated forks in my opinion.

i need some help with a stuck seatpost

Another method that sometimes works on an aluminium post in a steel frame is one of those pipe freezing kits that are typically used to form ice plugs in copper water pipes (to allow repairs or alterations without draining down the whole system). Fit the foam jacket round the seatpost and...
