There are a couple of tandems that come with independant pedaling systems, but they all suck. A lot. They typically aren't built to handle the power that two riders push out, and they make handling the bike in corners much more difficult, especially for a new team.

since tires are a HUGE step up in performance, consider making one set of wheels your "track" setup, and the other streets.
If you go that route, don't automaticly make the 17's your track wheels- you should use the lighter set. Calculate out the weight including the tires. That'll be the...

I'll say that there are few better sounds than a screaming turbo, and a nice, fat "whoooosh" every time you clutch under boost.

I just dropped a Borla stainless exhaust onto my car, and it's a really nice sound... after having it for two weeks now, I'm still happy.
It's very quiet at idle, unnoticable on the highway, and only really makes itself known at full throttle...
