In the bad old days, we had 28 - 28 as granny gears. And that was in toeclips with sandshoes, my granny ring was even biopace. We used to get our bikes up all sorts of stuff. Now the thought of doing it in 32 - 32 (which is the same gear) makes my knees creak just thinking about it
One slight adjustment you can do to the stock race mcu is drill the 3 holes in the bottom out to 3mm.
Still nowhere as good as a team unit, but much better than stock. Adn would in all likelyhood stop them from blowing apart so easily if you have that problem

It would be the master cylinder seal. Unfortunatly for the awesomeness of the brakes shimano consider them to be "unserviceable", just like all there brakes. Thats why there are no parts or seal kits for them outside of res caps and lever blades.
