    drivetrain setup

I am going to be simplifying and lightening my my bike this winter, and I have a few questions regarding the drivetrain. I am going from a 2X9 to a 1X9. First, if I run either a 11-34 or 11-32 cassette and a 32T chainring up front, can I use a Short cage derailleur? I am deciding between a...

    Drop Off 1

I have a drop off 1, and I would say it was worth the two hundred I paid for it. I like the fact that is has a coil spring in both legs, unlike the other drop offs which have air cartridges. I did have problems with it being a little too pogo sticky at first, but after playing with the oil level...

    Chainguide

You probably don't want to put a chain tensioner on there unless you go singlespeed. Another alternative to a chain guide is the blackspire stinger, which is more economical and quelled my chain drop woes, but as long as the chain is taught enough, I would go with binary's recomendation

    Winter Tire Choice?

I considered the Gravities, but there seems to be a consensus that they pack up in mud, which is why i chose the veticals over them. I will update when the Contis come in if they are a pain to mount (I ordered them yesterday :happydance:). If I can mount them on my 27.5mm wide Rhynos, then I'm...

    Winter Tire Choice?

I've actually rethought my decision because it was met with opposing thoughts from fellow PNW riders over at MTBR. Now looking hard at a Conti Vert in the rear, and Diesel in the front (ProTection for both). Jenson has them both on sale, and I can have both shipped for about 60 altogether. Kal

    Winter Tire Choice?

I decided to try out Nevegal 2.35 Stick E compound in the front, and a panaracer Cinder 2.25 in the rear. I think that between the two, they will make good winter tires (both have a sticky rubber compound), and are versatile enough to use in the summer too. I'll update with the results. on an...

    Winter Tire Choice?

I'm looking to get some new tires this Christmas for the wet months, but have been spending hours looking at threads for any help. I have a few ideas, but I thought it appropriate to ask those that ride the same dirt as I. My XC trails consist mostly of MAC forest here in Corvallis, but also...

    Chainguide?

Hey! :D That was pretty cool. Too bad I would probably have issues with clearance with my rear tire though... I already had to slightly modify my front derailleur. Thanks for the suggestions. I think i am going to try the Blackspire Stinger, since it's only $25 :brow:

    Chainguide?

I hit the DJ park and do a little urban assualt when I am bored and can't make it to the trails. Since my current bike needs to serve all purposes (XC, DJ, FR, and a little DH), I want to stay with the dual ring set up in front. Might switch to SS when I save up enough for a Bottlerocket or...

    Chainguide?

After an embarrassing chainsuck incident that occurred after a sequence of jumps at the local DJ park this weekend, and also left me crouching over my bike for about 30 min as I pried my chain away from the derailleur, chainring, and frame :disgust: , I am considering a chainguide for my 2x9...

    2x9 Chain Guide

Hey, I was browsing eBay, and came across these two interesting items. They claim to eliminate the chain from dropping, while allowing you to keep your 3x9 or 2x9 setup. Heim 3 guide...

The Hardtail 'Frames and Geometry' thread

Here's my MC rumble. Although the company went away for awhile :nopity: , they are on the upstart, and from the company blog, they are not making any changes to the rumble ("if its not broke..."), which is good since it's the perfect all rounder. You can probably pick up a 2005 frame (the year...
