I think these things are great based on the sole reason that your (competent) local bike shop can TOTALLY (yes rebound piston/damping included) rebuild them. I've got several people on them with no problems on them and think they work great.
Try putting about 10-20 cc of fox float oil (or 75w gear oil which you can get at NAPA for much less than fox's proprietary stuff.) in the positive air chamber (yes I know there is not an official negative air chamber here, but just make sure the oil goes on top of the air piston that is below...

I'm pretty sure that GT will have two Fury models this year, one that is $$$$ and one that isn't so expensive, more of a budget price point. Also, you guys are really going to like their Ruckus line this year. Actually, the entire GT line looks awesome. Wait a few more months until interbike.
