Uphill:
The Quake's 4 -bar / 4 Pivot suspension offers alot of traction that is best observed when the climb becomes loose, rocky and technical. It efficiently puts the power down and makes the bike feel like 10 lbs less on the uphill. I've personally done a 20 mile ride on this 45 lbs rig when...
Nice Quake! I got mine a couple of months ago from Mike as well but I just got the '06 CL7 frame with DHX 5 coil and built it up from the parts of my old bike. I guess I built it more as a mini dh bike, and the weight is a very hefty 45 lbs.
My previous stable
My current stable
For DH - shuttle only (Mountain Cycle Shockwave 9.5)
For DH/FR - short pedal to the top (Marin Quake)
For XC/AM - all day epics & AM (Mountain Cycle San Andreas DNA)
I have the Mono 6 and hated the sintered stock pads because it squealed hard when it got hot. I bought 4 pairs of Discobrakes for $24 and the squealing went away. I guess the pad material was more organic but it was good enough for what I do and really cheap too. I guess they also have that for...
I've got Continental Digga 2.5 up front and Continental Diesel Protection 2.5 at the back of my mini-dh bike. Diesels are single ply kevlar bead while the Diggas are 2 ply wire bead with black chili compound. The Diesels are light enough for climbing and while the Diggas have really good grip of...
That was your bike alright and I've almost kept it intact from how you built it except for the tires (Intense were worn out), stem (55mm v.s. 67mm), and seat tube (straight v.s. laid back) cuz I'm a shorter (5'8") but equally as heavy (220 lbs) rider and Tim of MC recommended that I do those...
I have a Shockwave 9.5 with Romic rear, 888R, Gustavs, and floating brake. The BB height of the bike is really tall but if your not gonna race, then that isn't too bad. In fact the high BB but low center of gravity feeling makes it an excellent plow machine cuz you don't have to worry about...
The Demo 7 is a pretty solid bike. My friends rides one and it's stable on the dh and really flickable for FR.
You might also consider a Marin Quake for your application. Shaums March won the '06 World Master's DH aboard the Quake. It's got a front derailleur that is useful for short climbs...
.
The Shockwave has a 9.5 x 3.0 shock while the Quake has an 8.5 x 2.5. The shortest that the Shockwave could run without any clearance issues would be 9.0 x 2.75 but that's gonna be too chopper city slack; I need a shorter AC height fork if I'm gonna shorten the shock or get the 8.0 inch...
Unfortunately they're of different sizes so it won't fit. The Romic ain't that bad specially after Roger custom tuned it for my weight after it blew up on a jump.
That section is lovely! Is that in the upper part? What are the gnarly sections there?
Now I'm worried for my friends cuz some of them have Nixon 145mm forks!
How I wish I could take take both the Quake & Shockwave but we're carpooling cuz gas is just crazy expensive.
I guess the Shockwave would be my safer choice cuz it's my first time out there and I'd rather have the extra travel to bail me out of bad landings as well as compensate for my lack...
My buddies and I are going to North Star this July 4th and it's gonna be our first time in that bike park. For myself, I haven't done any lift-access bike parks; rather just the local SOCAL shuttle trails. The guys that I'm goin with have AM/Light FR bikes (ReignX's, Enduros).
Unfortunately...
