that depends on your cranks, the bb is the same for the 68/73 it is the spindle that is different lengths, so assuming the spindle is for an 83 you will be fine, the spacer inside the bb has to be a 83 tho, so that may cause a problem
I have a dhx 5.0 with i believe the 300 spring ( it is whatever commencal recommended and it is perfect.) And i would not worry about breaking it, this bike did not become a world championship bike by being weak :)
I ride the new fmb big ape bars 28.5 wide and love it, i used to ride narrow ass bars but sooo much more control with wider bars, You really notice the control difference in dh, htus my dh bike has 31in wide bars :)
Nice ride that is def the best frame to get into dh with, just watch for cracks on the "cage that goes around the shock ( the pice that connects the seat tube to the downtube) my buddys cracked at the weld there and iron horse has done nothing to warrenty it
