it is not that stupid. It is actually pretty sweet, you downshift with the left thumb and up shift with the right. and as I use it with a geared hub, I can shift while breaking, coasting or when standing still. and the extra weight is minimal, not to say unnoticeable.
You are right, a Db in a box is not such a straight forward solution, a lot of work is needed to fit the components in. you should look at the new alfine, 11 gears and at 1.6 kg. (a little bit liter than the speedhub - 1.736kg) it is not that heavy. I am currently running an alfine 8 wheel...

the shimano alfine is doing brilliantly with xtr shifting presicion. at first I was using a sturmey archer, but after a month or so it went on my town bike (to much sliping of the gears)
Go Japanese, better fuel economy / kinder to the environment. and extremely well built and reliable, as well as excellent road and off road manners.
