    ***Wednesday GMT***

Morning.....(Well it's afternoon actually now. 1pm GMT) So..... I'm off to Cannock Chase in a bit (www.chasetrails.co.uk) for some XC shenanigans. It's just started to drizzle, so some of the sections will be like ICE (tiny smooth stones set into the trail). Makes for some fun riding! Then...

    Juicy 3s and oil/contamination

Can you get some IPA wipes (the little sterylizing wipes they give before injections) 100% IPA wipes are superb for cleaning your discs and they evaporate and leave no residue. Once you've wiped them, try not to touch them with bare fingers. This might stop the squeel. Another tip is to pour...

    I need a new fork

Fox tend to be pricey in the UK. I don't know why. They are famous for lasting a season here - the stanchions get ruined by the gritty mud. Rock Shox don't seem to suffer.

    Pressure washing bike; any concerns??

lol.... Riding in England is somewhat, moist, shall we say. We quite often have to drain our bikes through the weld air holes. It's not uncommon. I'm with you on the rag and hot water method, 100%. But you can use a jet wash if you use common sense.

    new brake is squishy

08 XT brakes? Apparently a real pain to set up - friends of mine have re-bled and reset 3 or 4 times before they settle and sort themselves out, but when they are setup they work really well. I know people who've been to the Alps with 180mm front and rear and they've been flawless. Go back to...

    Juicy 3s and oil/contamination

Check the rotor bolts are tight. Also a dab of copperslip on the BACK of the pads can help reduce vibration and squeeling. Check the disc isn't off. Spin the wheel slowly and press the brake lever and see if the disc moves side to side at any point.

I've never been to the airport befor the coffee place opens

Unlucky! For that exact reason (another coffee addict here) I bought a Gaggio espresso machine. Takes 6 mins to heat up and makes a superb espresso. Just what you need to drink before you leave the house!

    Mis matched Tire sizes

big tyre on the front. multi-directional. better traction and tracking. narrower tyre on the back (and lighter). only really goes one way and a lighter tyre spins up faster (laws of rotational mass etc)

    last night's dinner

Me and the wife went over to my parents for dinner. Gotta love your own Mom's cooking. She did a full on roast dinner - pork, apple sauce, roast pots, parsnips, brocolli and gravy. Oh, and triple choc gateaux for dessert. Washed down with a nice Pinotage. spot on.

Do I realy need 8 inch rotors?

Depending on your weight, 160 front and rear would be fine for XC. I'm 190lbs and use a 180mm up front and 160mm at the back and manage to stop fine. You need to check what is the max size rotor your forks are warrantied up to before installing new ones!

Oiled disc pads now they slip

Yep you can clean oil off pads with a blowtorch or heat gun. Not ideal I know, but it works. Pure Acetone or IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) will clean them too and I've had good success with Fenwicks disc brake cleaner (similar the the Muc-Off variety)

    Pressure washing bike; any concerns??

Of course you can use a pressure washer, just don't directly spray the hubs, headset, pedals or bottom bracket. Personally, I just use a bucket, a soft brush, hot water and some washing up liquid. I don't buy in to all this "bike cleaning" product.

I need a good saddle for my bike

SDG Bel Air (the chromo railed version). Very comfy. (Don't be tempted with the Ti railed version, it's only a few grammes lighter and twice the price!)

    Sram X-7 or X-9 shifter?

X9's are a lot more solid shifting than x7. Always see new bikes with the blingiest rear mech and poor shifters. x9 rear mech and x7 shifters. Personally, I'd do it the other way round, but bike manufacturers seem to think that having a pricey rear mech sells bikes better.

    I need a new fork

New SID is a lot tougher than the old one. 32mm stanchions and a "power bulge" on the lowers that increase stiffness. I wouldn't use the old SID's - far too flexy for me (190lbs) Have you considered something like Reba Race? Rockshox seem to settle very nicely and as you know are very plush. I...

    Hello from a new member!

Hi guys n girls, my name's Mark and I'm a mountain bike addict. It all started in about 1990 when I saved my money from a paper round and bought a MBK bike from Charlie Brown's (kinda like Halfords only crapper!). 200gs and 300lx gruppo. Weighed a tonne but loved it to bits - was a time when...
