So I'm lookin to buy a fixie

This thread is the wayback machine. I've been rocking a Kona Paddy Wagon for a while now. Very nice, and it comes complete .. so no trying to accumulate the right parts. That said, fixie-fying is still a great reuse for old road frames, if you've got a little help the first time around.

You'd need a high class hooker to have more fun for $500!

Do it, doooo it. You don't want strong brakes when you're fixed anyway. And when the "weak" tires are done, buy some you like.

    road shoes?

Ditto on the comfort angle. I used MTB shoes exclusively for many years, but as my road mileage crept up to the century mark I did have problems with hotspots (hot/burning sensation in my forefoot). I switched to a road shoe/road pedal and it went away. That said, not being able to walk in a...

    Racks

Thanks for the good suggestions, everyone. I'm thinking moderate loads with some frequency -- one-to-three night wilderness trips, shopping, picnic trips, that sort of thing. A seatpost rack might suffice, but I'd hate to find the limitations. And I think a trailer is a great idea for, uh...

    Racks

I hadn't thought of the Moots rack. Now that's go bling. I use the old courier bag for most day-to-day stuff but it doesn't excel at the farmer's market/grocery role and I certainly wouldn't want to go camping with it. Maybe I'll contact OMM and see what they have to say for themselves.

    Racks

Hm. Either of those options would work great for the quick-change. I wonder about the overall strength of seatpost models. A trailer, though. Hmm...

    Racks

...get your mind out of the gutter. I've been putting some miles on the Q-ball and have been really impressed with how easily it morphs into a touring-tire epic-fire-road-dirt-pavement type bike. So now I'm thinking about how I can put a rack on it. I know, I know. If I wanted a rack, I...

    Crank shifting...

The conventional wisdom is that once you've run an octalink crank loose, it will never stay tight again. My experience is that it's true...I ran a crank loose for a while and I was tightening that crank bolt every week from there on out. I was able to "fix" it after a while though by...

    Gearing Question

I ride my cruiser 36x16 and find that to be a good street gear if you aren't interested in getting anywhere fast. It's fine for most uphills, and easy to spin out on the downhills. That's with slick 26 x 1.75 tires, by the way. On a true road singlespeed or fixie (with much narrower, higher...
