I'll be flying with a bike for the first time this summer.
Usually when I travel with skis I can talk my way through excess baggage fees, but a lot of folks I know swear by just leaving the skis with the skycap, tipping well and letting them take care of it.

thanks for the advice. i read on gaijinpot that one dude would pull the wheels, bungee them to the frame and throw a tarp over the bike.
then i guess it would be feasible to throw the tarp/bungees in a camelbak and go ride.
i'm less concerned with dh-ing as you could just leave the travel...
