I've noticed a small difference, not huge though, going from a talas to float. But it was two different forks and that does leave open the possibility of different reasons why they felt different. But mine was pretty sweet. Even ran it at 80mm for a while...wasn't plush but perfect for dirt...
I've converted an old 36 talas where the talas wasn't working any more to essentially a float...Really all you need is the lower piston and the air top cap, seems to work pretty well, haven't had any issues with it.
I've had my XTi for the past six months and love it.
As said earlier, not having the dial on the back is a little troublesome but as an amatuer it is still plenty of camera. One huge advantage is the big screen on the back, a lot easier to see when compared to the older canon cameras...
Look into California Polytechnice State University. Some the best riding in California is in San Luis Obispo, and after you graduates, jobs line up for you. My buddy is CM here and he enjoys it a lot.
