Those of you who frequent eMpTy BeeR too will recognize this as a repeat thread from over there. I'd imagine most of you have seen the contest Titus is running where they'll trade a new Rockstar 29er for someone's car or truck? For some reason they're completely running the contest on Facebook...
Excellent writeup Mark! I almost wish I could justify to myself building up another 29er hardtail just so I could buy one of those frames. Now that I think of it, I don't have an offroad fixie yet...
What's the weight of the Continentals coming in at? I got a pair of RR 2.4's from the initial batch direct from Schwalbe (at nearly $70 each, ouch!) and I'm really impressed with them tubeless on Arch's on my El Commandante. They're really light and supple.
Cool deal. My first bike was a GT RTS-3, same basic design. Man, I loved that bike; I might have to blow the dust off it and enjoy the sweet 2" of 1994 travel.
So, did they all sell through? Slates website says that there was only 100 in the first run and they were expected October 2007. I need yet another bike (let alone a SS) like a hole in the head but that happens to be pretty close to the numbers of my custom Strong... No mention where/by who...
There's a guy here that runs a weed spraying business (not that that has anything to do with anything) named Dick Head. And yes, he goes by Dick, not Richard.
GT, I'm pretty anal retentive about the appearance of my bikes so I really don't want to go muck it out in the snow. I keep all my bikes in the house (I counted 16 just upstairs tonight when I was moving them around) and I have the El Co where I can enjoy it every day. I have been able to get...
Well, I've had this one in my head for quite a while; it just took the stars lining up to make it happen. The main thing I needed to do was to let go of my SyCip Diesel 26er single speed. I loved that bike but once I started riding 29ers I couldn't get myself to ride it any more, so it got...
The Demos are still a FSR design. They still have the pivots in (basically) the same places, the shock is just driven a little diffferently than "typical" (i.e. that Mondraker, Titus, M1, etc) designs.
I haven't even finished building up my new Ventana El Comandante and I'm drooling on this frame. If I was in the market I'd be all over this. I'm loving the green too, though the white pearl is pretty nice. Anyhow, you could get a 27.2 to 31.6 shim and run a 27.2 post in the frame. I've got...
Hmm, looks like I haven't added to this thread yet; not sure how come. Anyway, here's a few pictures-one of the Vicious and one of the Strong; for some reason I can't find one of the ChiTi single speed. I'll have some pics. of the new Ventana El Comandante soon too.
I've done a bit of research into the various 29er fs options out there now and the RIP9 sounds like one of the best, but with a few issues.
The biggest issue for me is the bottom bracket height. It sounds like the bb height is around 13" (without sag) which is too darn low for a bike with...
You can run the 5.5 Spot rockers on the Sultan, but you need to match them up with a custom-length and stroke shock to get the increased travel, so count on another $600 for a Cane Creek Double Barrel shock too. You should be able to order the El Cap or El Ray with the 5" rockers straight from...
I wouldn't count on a Fox 36 29er fork anytime soon; they just came out with the 32mm stantion forks. It seems like the reports on the White Bros. forks are universally good; another option is a Maveric DUC with the spacer installed to shorten the travel to 4.5" or so to work on the 29ers.
In theory, it would slow it down a little (seems like it has a few mm less rake). In actuality, it's probably about as noticeable as 10 psi. difference in your front tire.
First thing first; the first and main reason that the seat tubes are spec'd steep is for tire/derailleur clearance. The manufacturers can try to keep the chainstay length in check (at least relatively short) and still have room for the rear tire to play nice with the front derailleur.
The...
