My own world inside my head
No it is a salt based system. The aquafiers in this region have super super hard water. Our state is high on average, and we are well above the regional average.
Ours is pretty bad, but not super bad.... I am going to pony for the aquasana system.

Supposed to be majntainance free for 10-15 years depending on usage of course

just an FYI if you install a salt based water softener system you need to do a flush of your hot water heater every 4-6 months to prevent sediment build up from the softener which will kill your water heater. I learned that the hard and expensive way.

Can't be any worse than the 8 inches of calcium deposits I had to clean out from the hard water...

same thing. mineral deposits of one sort or another. the water softener speeds up the accretion. you just run a hose from the bottom valve out to the street, open it up and let it flush for about 5 minutes and you are good to go
