In a van.... down by the river
We are going to do a bit of that, paid for by the rent of a few houses...
Yeah - I'm thinking once the kids are out of college (and the mortgage is gone), maybe we'll rent the Colorado Palace out and just cover rent wherever we're calling "Home" at the time. Figure no matter where we end up living, the rent on whatever we're in will be less than the rent we can get from this fucking monstrosity of a house.

Was talking cars again with Wifey last night because I'm getting a smart head unit for the Subaru for bluetooth, nav, rear camera, etc (Android Auto) and she asked when I was going to sell the M. I pointed out that combined both of my cars cost less overall, cost less monthly in payments (none), and cost less to maintain than her single car even if they needed to go in more frequently. Then that both cars need to go in for servicing over the next few weeks. Pretty much killed the conversation but made it clear that the M is off the chopping block. I probably could have phrased that whole thing a lot better, but oh well...
i hope you putting your foot down echoed throughout the neighborhood.....

and what is the wifes aversion to FREE FUCKING MONEY?

If there’s anything I’ve learned from the working world it’s that you need to take initiative and make things happen! Bosses love that shit.

Our building is so ghetto we don't have a water cooler.

Fun fact: my director sent out a mini survey yesterday. One of the questions was akin to "does the company provide you a state of the art facility and equipment?". We were told to be honest. My response began "LOL no. We're stuck in a dumpy ass building that hasn't changed in a decade.". The meeting next week where we have a round table discussion with the survey results is gonna be fun.

Here. Hannah is back in daycare with no temperature, which is nice. She'll be going to an ENT in a week or so, as she's had three ear infections this year so far - two of which were doubles. Haley asked for a mtn bike so that she can ride more than just around the neighborhood and because she doesn't want to race BMX. She also said that she probably wants to do the Devo program next winter, but wants to think about it still. Since she's beyond my capacity to teach her more, all I can provide is time on the hill, which she seems to understand.

Still trying to convince her to let me rent out the basement. It's a walkout 1-br in-law suite that we could get $1200/m for and we can easily isolate from the main floors with a deadbolt. That's over half of our mortgage, but she won't have it. It's space that we effectively only use for storage. It's enough that we could pay off the house 15 years early if we did it for four years until Hannah is out of daycare and continued with what we are paying for that. Or... Just investing that amount of money would provide for an incredible amount of additional annual savings we could probably retire 5+ years early or have college paid for in advance. The list could go on... Saying all of this stuff out loud makes me feel like it is even more insane not to.
I bought my first house (life before wife) and rented the other two rooms out. Then we I got married, we rented a room out up until 2 months before my second was born (to the same dude, he actually moved with us to our new house). It's definitely one of the reasons we've been able to get ahead. I'm going to encourage both my kids to do the same. We'd probably still rent if we had the room, especially a detached space. My brother has a small 1bd/ba behind his detached garage that he rents out for like $800 a month. If you do your due diligence and pick the right tenants, it's easy money.

We had one of those a few years ago when I was at JPM still. I laid it all out (I'm ADA, fire me) from both what myself and others had issues with. About a month later there were a bunch of HR mandated policy changes, a few managers were let go, and comp changed because of the conversations. Sometimes you just gotta say fuck it.

Fixed the hub I phucked up. The guy paid me for my work. He was kind of a douche to me however. I see some expensive bikework in his future.

Oh I was absolutely brutal about it. Because none of the management in my functional area has any say whatsoever in the facilities. Not a damn thing is gonna change.

kids have spring break this week. me and wife both have to work the first few days. she turned ‘em out into the woods/swamp behind the house so one of the things the did was build a giant network of caves and tunnels for their rats on the bank of the creek. good stuff.

That looks like some good dirt. Teach them how to grow things. The next storm and that is your neighbors dirt.

Yea all of OC is 1.1% AFAIK. Our lot is like 9000 sq ft, which is pretty good size. One of these days we’ll move and buy acres. I’d leave now if I could.
I'm just giving you crap. I'm glad I left socal while I could. It's nice there for sure, but cost of living is insane.
