5/8 russian ply with a 1/8 applique stapled and glued. Having made real shaker doors with a router, this method is cheaper and faster. Of course only for painted doors.
That's brilliant. I had a piece in the garage and showed it to Wifey. Explained it to her, using wood fill to smooth out the edges, with painting being required. She wants white anyways, so she's totally onboard. Her bigger concern is how do we paint the glossed walnut cabinets. I might just give her the orbital sander with some 600 grit and tell her to have at it to get a rough base.

Chemically de-gloss, oil prime, sand and let ‘er rip.
