@Pesqueeb, I have the same boots that @slyfink posted for fatbiking and can confirm that they're warm, comfy, and work well with flat pedals. If you decide to stick to 'proper' cycling shoes for commuting in the winter, then I whole-heartedly agree with @jonKranked's opinion that shoe covers are for suckers and actual winter shoes are what you want. After years of doing the shoe cover thing I finally got a pair of winter shoes and won't ever be going back.
I've commuted comfortably in the cold with hiking boots and flat pedals. My feet always get cold with proper winter clip less shoes. Having a chunk of metal bolted to the bottom of my foot just conducts all the heat out.

45 North winter shoes/boots do not do this (above -10?), but they are ridiculous to ride around in sometimes.
JM?

I'd rather be checking out racks
thankfully my perspective of them is indirect, via MR and CT

rather than looking right up the ol' anus through an optical scope, that is

People who are insufficiently cognizant of their surroundings and the need to manually turn on their headlights while driving when it's foggy should lose all driving privileges and their vehicle should be given to jimmydean to test drive.

Maybe 1.5 cars out of 20 while I walked the DSO just. The 0.5 was an old impreza with one failed headlamp, but at least they had them turned on.

Maybe it's the old aircraft mechanic in me, but if the vehicle is in motion, the lights are on. Time of day is irrelevant.
IMO every vehicle should have the feature that allows you to simply leave the lights on *all* the time and said lights turn off after you turn off/leave the vehicle. Our old Subaru Outback, Mazda CX-5, and Nissan Xterra all have this feature. I'm not sure why all vehicles don't...

Thats not a feature on all cars now?

The people that drive with their lights off, are probably the ones that don't read the owners manual...

I think this is a problem with the digital type instrument clusters. On older cars with pure analog gauges, the cluster wouldn't light up unless the headlights were turned on. Now instrument clusters are always lit, so there is no indication that your taillights might be off.

I once pulled up next to someone at a red light and informed them that their lights weren't on. They looked at me like I was an idiot.

It doesn't help with fog, but my VW has a cool feature where it turns on the lights if the wipers are going.

Wow, TSA has stepped up their game. For the last three years, I have been able to smuggle a co2 cartridge inside of my aluminum one up pump no problem. Got busted and called back to the check in desk, had to show them how to open it, and remove the co2. They were cool, but holy crap, that’s next level xray.
Did have to go through security again, where they really looked through things.

Pretty sure a lot of the time it's people solely relying on the auto-headlights in the vehicle and not being :homer: enough to manually turn the lights when required.

all these driver aids and nanny features are why cars cost so much nowadays. and why people have forgotten how to drive. no thanks, I'd rather a feature-poor econobox.

I'm pretty sure that headlights that turn off when the car turns off aren't really an expensive feature. I'm pretty sure that Volkswagens have had this particular feature forever, no? Or was that just the radio? :D

Can't say I noticed much difference with the 45nrth over the crappy stock ones in my Lake 303/4's.

I used to have a Honda Element which is basically four seats and a steering wheel compared to modern cars. But there is something to be said for keyless entry and push button starting.

My wife swears this is her next car purchase. We'll see how this actually plays out when the time comes, but I'm all for it. I think it'll probably happen because she's pretty cheap. I've been the one wanting all the new fangled gizmos, but I've definitely changed my mind about that the last couple years. Really wish I'd hung on to the Jeep.

I quite like having good adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, wireless CarPlay, and heated butt/hands. not giving those things up. ok, wired CarPlay would be ok as an alternative

I doubt they are a substantial part of the cost increase related to production. I do think they are what the manufacturers and dealers want you to think is driving the prices so it looks like you’re getting something for the extra they’re charging. Don’t ignore the fact a lot of the overhead that gets included in the price is the same for feature rich and feature poor cars.
