Wife wants a home espresso machine. Apparently the drip isnt drippin enough. Breville is about to get a small mountain of my money. Dammit

When I was researching anything under like $400 is basically disposable now.
We are happy with our Breville 870. Had it for 6 years now. It had developed a leak after two years so we sent it in for repair. Breville sent us a new machine.

Depending on the size of mtn of money you are willing to part with try a Jura. I have lusted after one for years and finally took the hit. Ridiculously easy to use and maintain, I love the coffee and shots that it makes and they seem pretty durable & repairable. Anecdotally, I have two friends that each have had theirs for a while. I think one is 10+ years old…

I’m tired but home. Decided to make my escape yesterday. I5 was open when I left but closed at the grapevine. So I took the 101 and stopped to visit my sisters new house in Ventura. Lots of snow on the hills! Took me 19 hours. Only the last 30 minutes did I really start to feel tired. Just gunna relax today.

jeezus....

Is that better than going the 395/inland route? I guess mammoth probably had snow. They pretty much socal-proof that hill out of bishop these days. One flake of snow and you better have a steel tracked vehicle or they won't let you up.

it was closed in Inyo county. Which I believe is south of that grade. But I’m not sure. According to the google the 395 route is 30 minutes longer than the 5. But is definitely more interesting. I threaten to go that way and bring my bike or skis, but haven’t yet. We go that way when I bring the family and camper. The other problem with the 395 is it’s lots of 2 lane blacktop and speed traps. The 5 its more legal to go 80mph and safer with more rest stops. There was another route out to Palmdale and back to the 5. I decided to go see my sisters new house and take a familiar route as I used to live in Monterey and drove the 101 a lot. It was beautiful.

Yep, that's the socal gauntlet.

I forget about the cop scene from mammoth south as bishop is about as far south as I work.

idiots from socal fuck up everything

They'll be skiing spring snow at mammoth till July this year. Worth the route when it quits snowing.

Ive done the drive to mammoth quite a few times in my life and have gotten only one ticket so far. I’ll be going that way in March with the family. We always grab stuff at Eric shatz bakery.

First ride on the new bike was a mixed success. First off the trails had thawed and had a muddy top layer which made for some slow trails. Bike still needs a lot of adjustment before it's dialed worst off was the derailleur. All in all I am happy and it will be a fun and fast bike.

@kidwoo are you sure it's not liquified crawlspace musk? The finest microbiology available...
Crawlspace is dry.

It's ice dams. House got a new roof two summers ago. This winter is the first real test. That's the only thing that's changed. We've had bigger wetter winters than this.

Apparently this is pretty common with ice dams, I've just never seen it personally. I called a friend of mine who used to do mold mitigation and he said other than straight up pipe breaks, this was a lot of his business.

In the bathroom, fighting a battle
Blah, haven’t gotten a full nights sleep since some time in 2022, took some NyQuil last night to try and improve my slumber, got 9 hours of solid sleep. Woke up to the big dog laying on the bed with his nose in my ear blasting out dog snot with every breath. I have an ear full of dog boogers, but I’m well rested, still somehow a win

Been really happy with my Bambino Plus, not espresso snob worthy at all, but thing makes a kick ass cup of juice. As an added bonus my wife has been using it a couple times a week instead of going to Starbucks so I think I’m in the black on the investment.

Over here it was a mix of frozen and thawed. Even the thawed ones were pretty fast.

Ran into two ebike bros. One older, the other overweight. Made fun of my Uzzi, called it "old lady". They got some shit about their e-mopeds in return. They filmed themselves hitting a 1.5 m jump from different angles and the one guy claimed he was in the air for 4.5 m according to his Garmin. Sure! :nope:

Then they sped off on the blue singletrail. Caught them later again because they were catching their breath. :wtf: Isn't this what e-bikes are supposed to help with? Anyway, I passed them and continued to take all red and black options, so by riding the blue they passed me again while I was riding one of those longer options. The "old lady" on unridabru wheels really sucks in technical terrain.

Those two were so stereotypical e-bike riders, I am kind of wondering if I appear in a hidden camera prank video soon.

Got to race one of the teen league kids today. That was some fast action. Got to work with each other on faster lines. Was pretty cool.

Water still coming up from the floor. Pulled down what I could of the ice dams but it's just not stopping.

more fun ahead
Step 1

dig out roofline
line up the CaCl pucks to make drains and/or break points

Step 2: realize it's about to dump 6ft of snow again, get impatient and just start fucking wailing on shit with a mountaineering ax for 2.5 hours

Bought house May 2021. No swallows evident on March 2021 inspection prior to closing. Seller conveniently didn’t disclose that he’d been illegally pressure washing off swallow nests from spring onwards in prior years.

anyway, swallows move in—house backs up on a creek. Build ~250 mud nests along eaves. Can’t touch them due to Migratory Bird Treaty Act until August. August 2021 spend ~$25k for a company to come remediate all that, up on a 60 foot boom lift, and install metal flashing along the eaves to keep them away.

February 2022: find bed bug looking things all around house. Turn out to be swallow bugs: they follow birds and their detritus. Get house chem treated x 2 and heated to 130F in March 2022. Think they are gone.

January 2023. Swallow bugs back, at least in one upstairs bathroom. One MLK rental group cancels upon checkin, mistaking them for bed bugs (which is fair—they do look very similar). We don’t find out until we come up early Feb. Got house chem treated again.immediately.

Swallow bugs still there (only a few now, in same bathroom) this weekend. So now going nuclear and having the house heat treated again this upcoming week, another ~$3k so not nearly as bad as for the swallows initially but still an ongoing expense and drain on my mental health. Got to move all meltable things and fire extinguishers to the garage in prep.
That must make you so mad you could just spit!

My best advice on espresso machines if you are going to spend substantial money on something make sure it's repairable
Sí. I had a Breville and the plastic water pump cracked...no replacement available...and it apparently happened to all of that model.

But why?

(Are builders total idiots in CA?)
All the houses up here that were built forever ago (60s in our case) were mostly built as summer houses. No one used to come up here in winter until the ski area thing started up in the late 60s-80s. You should see some of the driveway monstrosities built into the hills around here. No one in their right mind would do that shit with snow in the picture. My neighborhood was built to be the summer labor housing for some resorts that used to exist on the lake right here.

The mansion crowd has completely captured all the contractors up here. They don't even call you back if it's not a multimillion dollar job. Can't get plumbers, can't get roofers, can't find car mechanics that don't charge at least double the hourly rate of the rest of the state.

And I'm not changing it. See other post above. In addition to normal county in california bullshit, we have all kinds of other dumb shit regulations specific to lake tahoe. In typical liberal fashion, this entire region is set up to only serve millionaires and billionaires now. I don't own the house but my partner does. You have to have licensed contractors do anything and contractors for the poors don't exist anymore. The county has patrol cars looking for people doing unpermitted work every fall when everyone skirts them

You said it was redone a few years ago. You did it or had it done? Warranty? What underlayment was used? Peel & stick? One row or full roof?

Full roof, felt and apparently not enough tar paper or equivalent. Had to pay a contractor from reno to come up and do it for the permit which the county still denied like 4 times. Place had two roofs on it when we moved in. It was rotting but it never did this shit. It obviously needs to be sealed better somehow.... Any ideas from the great white north?

I feel like I understand why you are so bitter and angry all the time.

Got any de-icing cables installed?
