I first learned of the Minutemen from Wax Trax records on 13th Ave in Denver in the mid 80s, they had a section they called hard core where you found lots of records from SST. Husker Du, Meat Puppets and the Minutemen were what drew my attention. Wax Trax would demo any record if asked, before the internet this was often your only option to score new music as MTV style crap dominated the radio. Good god I am getting old...

You both suck. You had to bum a ride to Modesto (there wasn't a bus) or I would ride my roadie 28 miles to the mall to buy cassettes to play on my walkman home. There was only a ghetto record store in town that had nothing but top 40's.
I had a lot of vinyl, but it was hard to pack on the roadie. So I switched to buying cassettes mostly by '87 for ease of transport. Once I got my Walkman Sport, it was all over.
