looking to upgrade my my hayes nines and have been offered some 02/03 mags for a good price (with goodridge lines), ive done some searching and not come up with much on that particular year for the hayes, i just wanna know if theres any specific problem with the older hayes or are they as reliable as the newer ones.

i know the mags have a good reputation for not pumping up or fading and being nice and consistent on long tracks, just wanna make sure these will be the same.

this is the set ive been offered if it helps..

Not 100% sure but the front brake is different than the rear brake in the picture. The front brake looks like the plastic body type. Not sure if there is any problems with this exept there is some flex in the brake body when you squeeze the lever hard. Hope this helped.

cheers fella

yea the guy said the front was slightly different.. i can live with a bit of flex for the moment as long as the brakes are consistent, i`ll probably just buy a new mag lever at some point, i`m getting them for a good price so i dont mind spending a little more on em.

anything else i should be aware of?

You may want to also find out which calipers they have....there isn't a huge difference, but the g2 calpers were an open system allowing the pads to remain cooler. I have the older system and haven't had any issues, but I try not to ride the brakes too much... :thumb:

Hmmm...My bad...I think the g2's didn't come out until 04.....so it may be a non issue anyway..

yea i wasnt expecting them to be the g2 caliper, as long as theyre consistent on long downhills its all good, i`m not heavy on the brakes, just like to know they`ll work when i want them to. if the only difference is the plastic lever thats fine i`ll just upgrade when i can be bothered/or it breaks.

cheers for the info..

the callipers themselves are fine are very easy to fix should anything go wrong

overall the brakes are very reliable, and you shouldnt have any problems

just the leaver for the front brake is a Comp version
which i cant stand because its quite flexy when you apply the brakes
you should definatley change that asap when you get it

I would stay away from the comp lever. I have bought full sets of mags w/ 8" rotors off of ebay for $150-175. I think I bought 4 pairs last year for various bikes.

I did as the same. Hayes Mag's, adapters, rotors, the whole 9 yards for I think $170 or so. Brand spankin new. They gave me a bleed kit as well :)

I know on the newer, I'm guessing 03+ instead of a pin that holds the lever blades on (which is a PITA to change levers with, requires a homeade press of sorts) they use a 2 bolt deal as the hinge. It is 100 times easier to change a bent lever blade etc....

Otherwise it's just like others said. 1 mag brake, 1 comp brake. Just be happy it's not HFX-9. Those had issues.

I'd get it if it's a good deal with you, ride it until it does break. Or do as what others have said and check out Ebay for a new set.

yea the only problem with ebay is i`m in the uk and uk ebay prices will be much higher and if i buy US ebay then by the time ive paid postage and duties i`ll be paying over the odds. the pair ive been offered are going for equivalent $150 with the goodridge hoses which for me is a real bargain in the uk where we get raped on prices for EVERYTHING especially bike parts.

i`ll just replace the comp lever when it dies or if i really dont like it

cheers again guys..

I just sold a set of 6/8" G2 mags with rotors and adapters for $175 with carbon levers...

I also saw a set of 8/8" mags for $169 here on RM a few days ago.

They are out there in abundance.
