04 Slider Your thoughts!

A buddy just ordered an 04 slider. Just wondering what your overall opinion of them are? Hes putting them on his Bullit. Anyone have this combo? Ive never rode a Manitou fork so I am curious

two guys i ride with have them, and they both hate them. even after rebuilds from the canadian service center they still didn't feel great. ive only done a parking lot test so my results aren't very accurate but i didn't find the feel to be very desireable.

hopefully that isn't the case for your buddy.

To each his own. Everybody has an opinion and I value them all. I have heard both good and bad about everything, but I also take them with a grain of salt. There are lemons in every batch, and to some, something may suck, but to others, they swear by them. All of this trash talk about this sucks, that sucks, this rules that rules, Hayes vs. Hope, Bullit vs. V10, Marz vs. Manitou, etc....doesn't matter. I hope that these will work for me....if not, another pair is waiting for me at the shop. I will be the judge and I will post my experience with them whether good, bad or indifferent.

I started coming here to gather information about product and technical stuff so that I could better educate myself on decisions but it seems that there is no solid choice for any topic. Instead, I hear opinions (some educated, some not) from riders (some experienced, some not) but nothing ever seems to be answered.

To sum it up, ride em' yourself and either you got your $$s worth or you didn't.....................

one thing that disturbs me (if firefly weight was truley less than 5lbs for the 20mm it would be a fork that i'd be considering right now) is the fact that many many slider/sherman riders report that they STILL have to grease their fork to make it run smoothly...wtf?

i just got my slider....an used one that was overhauled at manitou and then sold to me. i was skeptical about the SPV valving...because i was afraid that it would have horrible small bump performance. and when i installed it, i was sure that my fears were true. the fork was literally rigid as i tried to compress it while on my driveway. it was only until i hit the trail i realized how awesome SPV is. the fork would become instantly active on the rough stuff. even the stutter, high speed braking bumps just simply disappeared. i was blown away on how well it performed. my front end just felt glued to the ground; well behaved and controlled. i also feel that torsionally, it was stiffer than the boxxer, perhaps it was their hexlock axle system.

well...i hope that helps...if you don't weigh too much and don't do huuuge stunts, this is a perfect race fork.

just use a little less pressure then they actually say and its butter I have mine on lowest possible cause I only weigh 130ibs. I put the progression on a little and its super sensative yet wont bottem out. Once you get up to speed is where it really shines. It just sticks on the ground and sucks bumps its like it gets into a sweet spot. I have no stiction the only reason people get that is because they set it up wrong and it stick with the spv. You really have to mess with the rebound to get it right but all in all I like it as much or a little more then the old 04 super t i had.

WTF?? i've got 2 yrs. DH/FR on my sherman and maintenance has been low. have only regreased the evil genius seals a couple of times. basically, the only maintenance i've had to do is drain/refill the semi bath oil (i've used 10W40 full synthetic motor oil, and lately tried 20W50) occasionally.

the damping chamber oil gets changed every 30 approx. days of riding. i'm using 7.5 wt.

everything's been plush, smooth, and bushings remain slop-free so far.

the SHerman riders i know in california (incl. n. cal, where it's often wet, unlike where i ride) have reported the same thing.

what re-greasing are you talking about exactly? just the lip inside the evil genius seals??

well yeah, i consider changing the oil every 30 days to be on the side of excessive and regreasing the seals as well. Yours doesn't sound as extreme as others, but just take a look at the "SPV clunk" thread, so many users saying that they have to regrease their forks to keep them smooth. I thought the semi-bath would take care of that...

I loved mine until it blew the second day at Whistler. It's at Manitou as I write. It's an awesome trail fork. Spv works great.

ive come to the conclusion that semibath is also semigood, its halfway between oil bath and grease in terms of maintenance and feel, it works pretty good on inverted forks like the wb`s but rightside its not that great, still a lot better than grease ....

So it's truly the "diet coke" of open bath forks :D

Thanks for the info guys. I appreciate it because I just got mine mounted and am going to play with it this week before I go to Whistler on the 11th. I will tell you all about it when I get back.

read my post again (or maybe i should have been more clear :D ).

when i say 30 days of riding, i mean 30 days of hard riding. a day at northstar or mammoth equals a lot of vert on rocky terrain. and i like my bike to always ride like it was new, so i service brakes and suspension BEFORE they start to feel like sh*t, not when they feel like sh*t. bottom line is that in terms of maintenance, i'm doing about the same frequency of maintenance on the Sherman as i've done w/ all my marzocchi forx over the years. and so far (2 yrs of use on the Sherman) the durability seems okay..no parts worn out (i have 2 other bikes that get ridden but still the sherman does get used a lot).

like i said in my post, i've only regreased the seals a couple of times in two years. 'couple', as in 2 or 3 times. and this was done just for preventative maintenance, not because things weren't sliding right.
