both are strong i.e. redbull hucking approved. the kona is heavier. both are single pivot. kona's single pivot plus linkage has some advantages for shock loading. gemini DH floating disk has advantages for braking performance. for actual DH'ing and picking a fast line and nimble maneuverability, the gemini DH would be better. i haven't ridden a kona recently but some would argue the kona, while not as good for DH racing, is better for hucking and just plowing through things. my own prejudice is that the kona's are too heavy for what they deliver i.e. at that gen'l weight class, i'd rather a BMW or canfield. since both the gemini and kona are fairly common, any reason why you can't ride them both and decide for yourself?

out of personal preference, i would choose the gemini, it is much lighter and more nimble, and in has been proven, as well as the primo, as a huckable bike. but every once in a while i do like to just plow thru things like theres no tomorrow, what is your height and weight and whatnot?

Gemini all the way. I just got one and it's awesome. You can pick a line or plow through things, it'll do whatever you ask it. And it's lighter than almost every other DH frame out there. It's a great bike. Plus, it's made in Pennsylvania, where the Kona is made in Taiwan.

any pics of 05Gemini DH:)
It's identical to the '04, except with a slightly different paint job. Just find some pics of Cedric riding a Gemini with some black paint around the headtube and a big ol' SRAM billboard on the swingarm, and that's the '05 Gemini DH frame.

A recent French Mountain Bike mag tested 9 different DH rigs among them were the STAB PRIMO and The GEMINI. Test Riders were DH pros such as Fabien Baril and others , The STAB finished in the middle of the pack and the GEMINI was dead last. All of the riders were amazed that C.G. would do so well on this rig ! I will post a more complete overview of the test and the results later today.

I hate this theme.

This is what you have to understand noob: Do some research and don't just ask questions like "what bike should I get." That's pointless, a waste of our time, and frustrating.

You need to:
1) decide what kind of rider you are (skill, smoothness, style, type of riding you do)
2) what type of bike would fit your style (super burly, lightweight, 4 bar, single pivot, etc)
3) what your budget is
4) read through past bike reviews
5) reduce your list of possibilities to about 3
6) THEN you can properly ask a question by stating for example "I'm 6'0" 170, have no experience DHing, am not smooth at all, only do stair gaps and huck to flat, and want a single pivot b/c of simplicity. I've limited the selection to these 3 bikes, what are the advantages/disadvantages to each?"

If you don't, you're going to to get one of two types of answers. One is that everyone and their mother with not a lot of bike knowledge will respond praising the bike they happen to own no matter what type/price and say it's the right one for you. Two, those of us who are sick of this kind of question will either flame you or not answer at all.

"Obviously you're not a golfer."

Your argument is now officially worthless.

damn cheese-eating surrender-monkeys :mumble:

recently i read a french mag shootout on two trailbikes and totally disagreed with their conclusions.

imagine that, a magazine review that people disagree with.

still it's always interesting to read other opinions.

its def not possible that this is a coincidence in the fact that cannondale is MADE IN THE USA. And considering the US and the FRENCH are in a really lame battle right now ie. freedom fries and what not. You can never believe stuff out of magazines. I know MTBR is BS but 5 out of 5 for the gemini from the actual consumer. Ive heard nothing but excellent things about the DH. I mean comeon thats like RC and MBA are a reliable bike source?

Your comments make no sense at all, did you even see or read the test, an overview is posted under DH Rig test,

The top bike in the test was made in the USA " Yeti " and second to last in the test "Lapierre" was made in France !!

Also isn't strange that one of best biker's in the world Cedric Gracia a frenchman rides a Cannondale , imagine that !!!

Allright...I'll chime in.

I have ridden a variety of DH bikes, from the BCD Inedible, to the Giant DH bike, I've seen everything from one off to high volume over seas stuff. I am a pretty big guy but consider myself a pretty athletic rider. Yes, I can plow with the best of them, but I've run the same singletracks all year long racing at the semi pro level, so I like to think I'm pretty smooth too. (yea, laugh all you want...)

Now, Cannondale IS one of my sponsors for 2004 so of course I'm a bit biased, but without making any judgement calls, (obviously I think the Cannondale is a great bike) I will make some observations.

Cannondale outline-
Single Pivot-NOTE pivot is lower than say an Orange 222/223 and travel is less (7.1") this makes the bike a more "neutral" handling bike as chainstays do not grow as much through compression. Allows for a more nimble ride.

Floating Brake-With 7.1" of travel, you actually appreciate this, and it works quite well.

The biggest thing with this bike is suspension SETUP is key. Cedric ran the exact 04 production bike at Mount Snow AND Idaho last year winning both. These are argueably two of the roughest and most demanding courses. Obviously Cedric is a great pilot but the bike does give you the tools neccissary to win.

Cedric runs his suspension with UUBBER sag. Over 40 percent. That is part of the reason the bottom bracket is so high on the bike to begin with (14.7ish) You then run it fairly progressive yet keep the SPV low in terms of how much shock pressure you run, 50-80 due to the low leverage ratio.

It's not the most flashy of bikes, but it works, and it works dang well when setup right and you are riding well. It really rewards you for making the right moves on the course but the Swinger does a good job of not penalizing you TOO much for your mistakes.

My best analogy is it rides like a big slalom bike or something. It's quick and snappy, it puts the game in your hands. You're riding the bike the bike isn't riding you. This took me a few months to get used to. (I liked to lean back and hold on...not anymore)
