that is correct, shimano has stated that these "new" XTR cranks are not for freeriding or downhill, they are not like the "old" XTRs that were pretty well suited for the abuse.
Sorry for bringing this old bitch up from the dead but I'm dying to run the 960 XTR cranks on my bullit, and the only way I'll do that is if I find someone that makes a decent looking bashguard and chainrin suited for our riding.
