Roel Koel's buddy isn't completely out of his mind- my wife has 10 speed on her trail bike and had the same derailleur issue where the spring that tensions the chain broke. It was a '11 X9. no crashes, bike had only been ridden several times. I had never heard of such a failure, and neither had the guys at the shop (its a good shop, too).
I like the idea of moar gears, but I'm hesitant for it on my DH bike, as 9 speed isn't quite robust enough imo. its easy to set up perfect when everything is new, but with some wear and maybe a little tweaking, it can be a pita. if 10 speed is less robust, I'll pass on the DH bike.
