On a low/slack bike it would be impossible to keep the front end planted while climbing anything steeper than a sidewalk crossing ramp.Lets say you're riding up something in 30/32 and in that 50 tooth gear....wouldn't it be faster to just hike-a-bike?
Yep. I used 32x42 for half of Pisgah and 30x42 for the other half. No complaints. Anything steeper was too rocky to be biked up anyways. On a low/slack bike it would be impossible to keep the front end planted while climbing anything steeper than a sidewalk crossing ramp.
Sunrace makes a 11-40 10spd cassette that makes sense to me. My lowest gear is a 36 and a 32t chainring. And four more teeth is all I'll probably ever need. But I also don't race anymore and am never too proud to hike up some Pisgah steeps. Money better spent on some comfy riding shoes anyway.
I'll have one with pepperoni, please.
Pisgah = 2-3hr drive for über gnarPisgah elevation = 5,000 feet
Targhee elevation = 10,000 feet
Different!
Words to live by.If there's a hill I can't climb I reconsider my life choices instead of considering a dinnerplate cassette.
I am. Using a 11-40 cassette with a 32 chainring. But I like a close stepping between gears, so it's a trade-off I'm willing to take. These cassettes would allow you to run a bigger front chainring therefore increasing your top speed without making a compromise on the climbs. Aren't you guys spinning out sometimes with a 30t or 32t?
The additional weight is the only thing holding me back for now.
Yeah, but why do that when you can run a 26t and have retarded low gearing? These cassettes would allow you to run a bigger front chainring therefore increasing your top speed without making a compromise on the climbs. Aren't you guys spinning out sometimes with a 30t or 32t?

Now everyone is working on new ways to climb slower than walking.
Not with fat tires because they float, dude, FLOAT!Now everyone is working on new ways to climb slower than walking.
I ordered one, to see if it works for me. I want to use a bigger chain ring, instead of downsizing depending on where I go. If I like the gear spread I'll order the garburak since it's lighter for the same gears. These cassettes would allow you to run a bigger front chainring therefore increasing your top speed without making a compromise on the climbs. What cassette? So what chainring/big cog on a modern 650b bike equates to the good ol' 22t/34t combo? 'Cause that seems to work here in CO for me, although I will admit there are SOME times that I wish I had even a MOAR grannier gear combo.
This was the biggest reason why I made the jump to eagle when my cassette and derailleur needed to be replaced. I was running 11-44 32 front and spinning out all the time. These cassettes would allow you to run a bigger front chainring therefore increasing your top speed without making a compromise on the climbs. with this goofy 50t pepperoni pizza cassette, you could use a 33t ring for the same easy gear as a 28t/42 or 22t/32.What cassette?
28t ring and a 10-42 cassette on a 650b wheel is pretty much exactly the same range as a 22/32 with an 11-32 cassette on a 26" wheel.
Sorry - the large cassette ring is 34. Combine that with a 22-tooth granny on front. What cassette?

I used Sheldon Brown's prior to posting the question... but let's just say I'm easily confused.@SkaredShtles

C'mon bacon boy. Got the lazy dial set to 11 today?
No. Not ever. But my max cadence is 260rpm.Aren't you guys spinning out sometimes with a 30t or 32t?
Dooood, the non-rear derailer side of your handlebar is for the dropper post. Duh. Not another derailer. Ewe gross. So what it appears... is that if and when I get a new bike, I'm gonna need to get a 32 front chainring and a 9x50 cassette?
WTF. Are front derailleurs REALLY that fucking bad?
Fucking bike industry.
