Lets say you're riding up something in 30/32 and in that 50 tooth gear....wouldn't it be faster to just hike-a-bike?

Pretty cool for the price. Must use mega b-tension, curious how that shifts through range and pedals.

e13 cassette is 9-46 for 11spd, has a bigger range, Twice the price, 1/2 the weight, etc.

On a low/slack bike it would be impossible to keep the front end planted while climbing anything steeper than a sidewalk crossing ramp.

Sunrace makes a 11-40 10spd cassette that makes sense to me. My lowest gear is a 36 and a 32t chainring. And four more teeth is all I'll probably ever need. But I also don't race anymore and am never too proud to hike up some Pisgah steeps. Money better spent on some comfy riding shoes anyway.

Yep. I used 32x42 for half of Pisgah and 30x42 for the other half. No complaints. Anything steeper was too rocky to be biked up anyways.

If there's a hill I can't climb I reconsider my life choices instead of considering a dinnerplate cassette.
Words to live by.

I run a 34t ring with an 11-40 cassette on my Megasquish and an 11-36 on my hardtail. When things are steep enough or I'm gassed enough that I need a lower gear, I might as well be walking at that point.

I quite like my 28-42 setup. Colorado steep climbs are steep.

It's impossible to ride these days without a 60 degree HTA, flat pedals and 50t cassettes. Just not possible.

These cassettes would allow you to run a bigger front chainring therefore increasing your top speed without making a compromise on the climbs. Aren't you guys spinning out sometimes with a 30t or 32t?
The additional weight is the only thing holding me back for now.

I am. Using a 11-40 cassette with a 32 chainring. But I like a close stepping between gears, so it's a trade-off I'm willing to take.

I run whatever the sram xd driver 11 speed is, 10-42 i think? with a 32 or 34 up front, been a while since I;ve rideen so I would have to check....I rarely spin out unless I'm on a road and going down a hill...maybe I am weak legged....

I wouldn't mind dropping my front chain ring down to a 30, but then I would spin out occasionally, but not often enough that I think I'd care....much more than that and has was mentioned...it would be faster to walk.

Yeah, but why do that when you can run a 26t and have retarded low gearing?

I have a 30t front ring and do spin out a lot but we have a lot of goat trails where the 30t is nice. If I could ride everyday I would think about gearing up a couple teeth up front.

See, when we complained that we were losing high end SRAM invented the eagle with a 50t cassette to use with 32 34 and 36t rings, but did we use those rings? Hell no, we put granny gears on em, at least until we get the e-bikes developed a little more...

Interesting. I just bought a Wolftooth 49t Giant Cog. More like pie plate.

Why? Cuz I want to do the oval chainring thing and for my XT cranks, the smallest that will fit is 30t. Normally, for my 36lb 29er, on my steep ass trails I need a 28x42.

Now I can spin the shit out of my newly installed 30x49. No fitness needed! Yay!

Yes I do spin out, but it's on flat sidewalks/bike paths. Not trails.

I ordered one, to see if it works for me. I want to use a bigger chain ring, instead of downsizing depending on where I go. If I like the gear spread I'll order the garburak since it's lighter for the same gears.

So what chainring/big cog on a modern 650b bike equates to the good ol' 22t/34t combo? 'Cause that seems to work here in CO for me, although I will admit there are SOME times that I wish I had even a MOAR grannier gear combo.

What cassette?

28t ring and a 10-42 cassette on a 650b wheel is pretty much exactly the same range as a 22/32 with an 11-32 cassette on a 26" wheel.

This was the biggest reason why I made the jump to eagle when my cassette and derailleur needed to be replaced. I was running 11-44 32 front and spinning out all the time.

Im now running 10-50 w/ 34 front and its boss. I didn't think id use the 50 as much as I have, but for early season out of shape riding its been awesome.

The weight difference was next to nothing at the end of the day

with this goofy 50t pepperoni pizza cassette, you could use a 33t ring for the same easy gear as a 28t/42 or 22t/32.

Of course, if you spent a bunch of money with a 30t front and the E13 9-46 cassette, you would have the same easy gear, but a ~14% taller gear when in the 9t.

Sorry - the large cassette ring is 34. Combine that with a 22-tooth granny on front.

My full set up currently is pre-historical: 22-32-42 on a SRAM 11-34 9sp cassette.

No. Not ever. But my max cadence is 260rpm.
Even though I have an unusual natural ability to spin cranks pretty fast I've no real interest in anything above a 36t cassette sprocket on any bike.

Spin out is only an issue for me at resorts on the big bike (only place I wind up sprinting on wide trails). In those cases I've swapped chain rings. This year I'm going to move to a 32/9-46 on the superdurpo which should let me leave the same gearing on all the time (unless I decide I actually want to race, then I'll go back to big ring/road cluster).

On my trail bike the only reason I'd spin out is sprinting on fire roads....which is just not that fun.

I agree with HAB. 22 x 34 on 26" is nigh identical to 28 x 42 on 27.5". Shared Skittles' 44 x 11, 106 gear inch top end on his vintage triple setup tops the ~75 gear inches possible with 28 x 10 on 27.5", though.

So what it appears... is that if and when I get a new bike, I'm gonna need to get a 32 front chainring and a 9x50 cassette?

WTF. Are front derailleurs REALLY that fucking bad?

Fucking bike industry.
Dooood, the non-rear derailer side of your handlebar is for the dropper post. Duh. Not another derailer. Ewe gross.
