Hey I have a giant dh right now and I'm getting a new balfa bb7. The giant has a 12mm thru axel in the rear and the balfa has standard qr drops. Anyway to convert a ringle hub to bolt on axel (9mm I think). Or am I just gonna have to pone for a new hub?
No, that won't work. With a 12mm thru axle the frame clamps onto the axle (like on a regular 20mm fork). However, you can run a 12mm nutted axle IF you can find / machine one to fit your hub (that's the hard part, but I've seen it done) and then cut the balfa dropouts to 12mm. You'd have better luck converting the hub to 10mm.
ok the spacing is NOT way different, its 135 on both frames. The question has nothing to do with the spaceing and everything to do with the axle. Please respond only if you know what you are saying is correct.
Geez it's easy!!! Just slot the axle, not the drops!! Woodman extreme hubs use a 12mm axle with 9mm slots. Anyhow... Use a file, and make sure they're flush!
NateH, you can probably get a local machine shop to machine you up an axle with a 12mm diameter, machined down to 9mm where it slides into the dropouts. Wouldn't be that hard - just go explain to them what you need and they should be able to tell you what kind of measurements they need from you to make it happen.
I'm pretty sure the Giant DH frame uses a larger spacing than 135mm... I'm pretty sure it'S at least 150mm is not 165. Cuz, the BB shell is 100mm, so, the spindle would be 143 or 148mm long. If it used a 135mm spacing, the chainline would be way off... My guess would be that this frame is using a 165mm hub.
