If the roof rack is anything like my hitch mount it's the best rack I've ever used. I bought my hitch mount for the front of my 5thwheel and it has been flawless. I've used it cross country twice camping off road on shitty roads and interstate @ 80mph with zero issues. I'm talking over 5k miles.

Three of my buddies have now purchased 1ups since I purchased mine 4 years ago. no one has regrets. my rack looks almost as good as their new ones. it's crazy how well built they are. One of those buddies has three on the hitch and two on the rack. He said he really likes the roof ones, they're better than any of the other trays we've used from Yakima and Thule. By a long shot.
Definitely this. I finally sold my super old Saris roof rack on ebay yesterday for $20, good riddance!
That said, I have a 1up hitch rack, and while the tray design works well enough in that application I think it would royally suck as a roof rack tray.
Overall I am one of the few people who doesn't completely love their 1up hitch rack. I actually bought a Saris Superclamp recently because a) it is 10lbs lighter in weight and I don't leave it on the car when not in use and 2: it cost over 40% less. In some ways it is easier to use as well.
The Thule Sidearm was a good both wheels on roof tray, I had several of those with zero issues before switching to a hitch rack.
that's what I thought too. But I guess the trick when loading the bike is to the have one of the arms in the upright position and the other one far back. You slide the bike in the upright arm, and then lock it in place with the other arm. easy peasy. you just have to make sure they're in the correct positions before grabbing your bike. apparently it's even easier than the sidearm.
I've got the 1Up hitch rack and a roof tray. first off, the hitch rack is coming up on 10 years of steady use and still going strong. so it's got that going for it. The 1Up on the roof is the same as the hitch, other than the obvious fact that you have to lift your bike up onto the roof... I underestimated how much I would get tired of that even on a little sedan. other than that it is great, super low profile and quiet on my roof when not in use. Slyfink's got the right technique for getting the bike in and out of the rack.
This^^^
That's what I've seen over the years. The plastic racks end up loosening up and rusting over the years plus they are almost as expensive as the 1up.
