Hey everyone, I'm starting to plan our trip to Sea Otter this year.
What is the closest airport?
Any advice on lodging? Any problems shipping bikes?
Thanks

San Jose is going to be the closest airport, Monterey has one but it's small and probably a lot harder and more expensive to fly into, depending where you're coming from. As for lodging, it's all going to be expensive in that area, so one hotel is probably going to be as good as the next. I'd look for something in Monterey.

Stay in Salinas and save some money, Monterrey is very expensive.

Marina is close too and cheaper. Fly into San Fran it will cost less and is only another 45 min drive. You might be able to get a good fare into San Jose... not sure.

san jose is usually better to fly into than sfo, but it does depend on where in the country you are coming from. Southwest usually has the best fares from most major cities, but they do not fly into sfo, just san jose and oakland. The Comfort Inn on Munras St in Monterey (www.comfortinn.com, there is actually 2 of them) is where we have stayed for the last 10 yrs or so. nice rooms, and no minimum stay usually. book early for best rates, and plan to go broke paying for just about any room/food/stuff in that area. It is just plain expensive, no way around it. If you stay in seaside, the rates are a little cheaper, but the neighborhood goes along with it. If i were staying in seaside, i would sleep with my bikes.....

Salinas or Marina, don't camp-it rains every year. Fly into SJ or SF whichever has better deals and fits your schedule better, really you're only driving to and from, not staying there. Highway 68 runs from salinas but there is a shortcut through marina called reservation road that will take you to the 68 or you can take the sneak back entry through the old fort ord. Bring money for goods and all your broken stuff and have the mechanics rebuild them on the spot for cheap!!!

Camping is the best way because your always right there, Ya it would suck if it rained but w/e your in a tent. Or if you have an RV or rent one that would be sick

Thanks everyone. I'm flying Delta because, well, I work for them so it's affordable. I'll check the flight schedule and see where we fly.
How about shipping bikes? I've never done that. Delta charges $80 for a bike box. When my daughter raced in Holland I got away with putting her BMX bike in 2 garment boxes so I didn't get charged. A MTB won't fit.
It will be cheaper to ship than to bring on the plane. Where should I ship to, the hotel?

Sleeping in my Kenworth
Ive pulled this off twice. Put wheels and clothes in one box that is the minumum size you can fit deflated wheels in, put the rest of the bike (frame folded up with either linkages off or shock off) and fit that in the maximum allowable size box. Sure you have to basically disassembal and reassembal the bike twice. But thats sure worth $160 to me
