What's the standard oil marzocchi uses for the spring leg? In all of my RS-forks they used damping oil in the lowers which has ****ty lubrification qualities and I replaced it wiht engine-oil but in my rc3 evo the oil on the spring leg had a different colour than the one used in the daming-leg.

That's fork/damping-oil I suppose? What do they use on the damping-leg then? Like I mentioned they had a different colour and the fork was basically new.

7.5wt GS in both legs. Exact volume differs between years, but ~300ml Damper side, ~80ml Spring side. Its open bath so you cant do much to the damper leg, but you can run 5w30 in the spring side for a puny bit of extra slipitude.

WTH is lubrification? ;)

Lol dunno, non native speaker here. I meant that fork/damping oil is developed with the focus on it's damping capabilities and therefore engine oil in the lowers of an rs fork or the right side of an mz fork makes the fork plusher.

I was just wondering if they already put non-damping oil in the spring leg for 2012 since it had a different colour and consistence to the oil in the damping leg.

Hey everyone. I have had a 2010 Evo Ti for a couple of years and will never ride anything else.
I recently rebuilt the fork and found that the original raw ti spring with shrink wrap was broken at each end. Basically the first and last coil with the flat spring seats were broken off. Marzocchi warranted the spring and new one arrived with a blue powder coating. After the rebuild I noticed some rattling during the initial compression/rebound of the fork. Does anyone have experience with these newer springs making noise? Also, could it be the damper leg topping out? I was thinking of adding a very thin shim under the c-clip just below the volume adjuster knob. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

I'm 150lbs and from my experience you probably can'T use the standard spring even with low oil heights, negative air pressure and all that jazz.

Like I said I'm using motor/engine oil on the spring side and the lowers of all my rs forks and it works really well. In case of the rs-forks the difference is instantly noticeable.

I think that this is Bulldogs bike.
On another pic he was also using an unlabeled Rc4 shock.
Could it be possible, that he uses a Fox cartridge? What's up with that?

I assume that's a Mondraker based on the custom no offset stem. Anyone know if that's a team bike or a privateer?
That is one of the MS Racing Summums with the Cesar Rojo 0 offset stem, probably Brooks. MS Racing is Markus Stöckls own team. Hes a pretty gnarly dude...

Maybe they fitted only the Fox dial after removing the VA unit and adjuster??

has anyone here removed the VA unit on a 2012 Evo Ti. A vid or detailed walkthrough would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

A guy on mtb-news said that some of the team forks get the va-unit removed completely and filled up with oil to give support. So it's just the 40 topcap because the va-knob isn't needed.

It's very interesting that they retrofitted a Fox 40 damper into the 888 for the WC bikes if that's what they did. Can anyone confirm?

Whitley in a recent DirtTV commented that Brook "has got his suspension sorted now" implying that he was not particularly happy with it up to now. This is no confirmation of Fox damping, but is suspicious timing.

This was also written on his homepage.
I was pumped to be ridding here again and with my suspension dialled now i was excited to be back ridding and getting my confidence back and speed back up there.
He's also riding an unlabeled RC4 which indicates also that he's riding Fox damping.

Has Marzocchi race support like Fox at the races?

Interesting, as based on this quote below, the fork still seems to be basically a 888 EVO2 Ti with Fox twisters

But if nothing else, it does seem like he is running RC4 in lieu of a ROCO.

I am just hypothesizing that he is using a 40 cart, so I do not know the truth.

Saying that, why would a marzocchi/MS mechanic use a fox part to effectively just fill a void left by a removed Marzocchi knob; especially on a high profile fork sponsored by marzocchi. Also there there must have been easier ways to fill the gap, Fox high speed adjustment knobs are hardly just lying around the MS workshop waiting for a change of purpose.

Fair points to be sure, although if you're going ahead and using a "sharpie'd" RC4, might as well and go full Monty and use a blacked out 40 rather than milking 40 guts into the 888 chassis. But who knows, maybe it's easier to that than I would guess.

I agree with JT, and the Fox HS adjuster also has a fairly proprietary interface. It would not connect with an 888 damper in any way I could see, so for them to have gone to the trouble of installing it, I would guess they squeezed in the whole damper. I imagine the 888 LS adjuster knob was just fitted so that it didn't look like an entire Fox damper.

jackalope - A fork is a much bigger part (and more obvious in pictures/adverts) than a shock, probably explains why there's no blacked out 40 fork. Although if I was doing what they did, I would have set the fork up and then removed the Fox adjuster! :D

Agree, I just thought it was weird having pretty prominent Fox adjusters sitting out there - which would of course result in people wondering what damper is really in there. To my simplified walnut brain, you might as well just slap some Zoch stickers on a 40 and call it a day - but your idea would obviously be the more discreet way to handle the switch.

All of that said, props to Fox if their cart is that much better. I have a 888 EVO, and I couldn't imagine "needing more support"...Then again, I also imagine I'm a wee bit slower than Brook

There was an interesting test of all state-of-the-art dh bikes in the german 'freeride'-mag where Johannes Fischbach did a few runs which each model and said that all the 888's where too soft for his taste.

Nevertheless I couln't spot the fox-adjuster in the dirtv-qualit vid on brooks bike.

from that vague description, it sounds like he doesnt know how to set a fork up for his rider weight.

i'm 185 lbs, live in steep rocky terrain and ride somewhat hard. its a 2012 EVO v2 with the standard spring.
i've got ~40 clicks of preload...
2 back from full in on the volume adjuster.
and i think 12 clicks of compression.
does this sound normal? i've never ridden a fork this plush and responsive but it seems to ride a little low in the travel especially when i've got to get on the brakes...

you are trying to compensate for too light of a spring

That. Disclaimer - I have a 2010 EVO, but I weigh just a bit more than you and ended up going with a heavier spring than the standard one. Now I have a lot less compression damping, and it stays up well in its travel until I do something stupid. Although, I think Rice is running a standard spring and weighs more than me, but I'm pretty sure his has some new valving.

With all this talk of needing stiffer springs I'd like to remind everyone that the '08/'09 888 air cart fits all 888s and with 2 minor modifications feels great, is infinitely adjustable, and lighter than a Ti coil. They (and the chassis they came in) were so unpopular that it should be cheaper to get one than a replacement Ti spring and maybe even steel.
