My boss wants help purchasing a mt. bike. He wants to ride around the perimeter of the city and occasionally hit the trail for easy XC. In my estimation, a 29er would suit his needs. He'd rather spend under 1k. I've read here that Specialized will have a nice ride around $650 in the fall, but he might not want to wait. He does want gears and I'm sure he'd prefer an air fork.

You guys have any recommendations on built bikes? I'm also not opposed to building him one. I don't think he's going to be too picky frame-wise.

What say you oddball 29er freaks?

The Haro Mary XC might fit the bill quite nicely. Also have a look at the geared Raleigh 29er. They'd be slightly more than $1K though.

I think Fisher Cobia would fit the bill too and is under a grand.

Oh and there is also a 29er from IBEX - you know that online bike company - that is set at $999 for a really well spec'd out 29er. The frame looks like a Fisher clone. Probably the best bang for your buck at the sub $1K price tag.

Others may have additional suggestions.

Best,
Mark
