Anybody have any suggestions for a nice set of wheels (ss), that are under the 300 dollar mark and offer a strong fairly light package. I don't ride cross country, race, or downhill 50 foot drops so just a all around package for trails and a light technical trail.

wtb rims are pretty nice and not expensive like $40 a rim. You can lace them up to some clearance sale hubs pretty cheep. look into hope xc hubs.

If you're wanting strong & fairly light for under $300, you may want to consider buying used, unless you're gonna build them up yourself. Are you looking for disc-specific rims? That'll narrow your search considerably.

Look into some of the Sun Ringle wheelsets - those might offer a lot of good bang for the buck. Search Jensonusa.com for some ideas perhaps.

Also it might be worth it to contact George at www.bike29.com to see what he might be able to build for you at that price point.
