I just watched the movie as well and thought it was pretty good. I dont feel like re-joining the Marines and going on a warring-spree so I guess it didnt have its desired, neo-con brainwash effect on me.

EDIT: although I do have a strange desire to purchase an ab-lounge.

It was alright. The dialog about freedom was a bit over-the-top and cheesy though. For example when the Queen said "freedom isn't free." Yeah, we know ... it costs a buck-o-five.

interestingly enough, historians say this was the first time all of the Greek city-states quit warring with each other and united to fight the Persians.... leading to the concept of a united Greece and the birthing the idea of democracy.

Great movie though!

Possibly the worst movie of all year.

2 hours of hanes underwear models running in minimal clothing and wearing and exsessive ammount of 'can in a tan'. Seriosly, dont go see this movie, even the Frank Miller porno scenes sucked.

And if you are thinking about going to see it for the fight scens forget it, cuz they suck.

my point is that portraying war as a video game/graphic novel, even if the protagonists die, conveniently leaves out the myriad ways war deforms people. (or maybe that was implied in the whole "there is no higher honor than to die in battle".)

:twitch:
This is always a funny issue: how appropriate are war films?

Is "The Longest Day" inappropriate? How about "Apocolypse Now"? "All Quiet On The Western Front"? "Paths of Glory"? "Platoon"? Or what about "Commando" and "Red Dawn"?

I know that 300 is one of the most hyped films this year. The creator of the idea, Frank Miller, is an extremely hot property and Zack Snyder is an up-and-coming film director. The studio threw a lot of money into the promotion and I believe they will make millions.

As for the reality of this film, well, there is none. It is based on a comic book written in 1998. There will be dumbasses who think this movie is about the "first democracy" or "freedom", but Sparta was ruled by a king who forced their children into the army (which is clearly mentioned in the film).

Would a returning veteran want to see 300? I would imagine not. But I don't see our generation's version of "Coming Home" or "Hair". Is that Hollywood's fault or ours?

there are midgets in this film?
The funniest thing I've read about the movie...

"There are a few deleted scenes, but not many. One of them is actually that we had these armless Persian giants that had these midget archers riding on their backs shooting arrows at the Spartans. And when I saw it I was like, 'You know what? That's even too much for me.'" -Zach Snyder

If you want reality, stay out of the movie theatre. ;)

By the way, the History Channel has been dishing out the straight dope on this subject all week.

Werd Cotton. The History Channel rocks in general.

As for the movie, it was damn entertaining. In some ways it felt like the movie was moving too slow and too fast in certain parts. Perhaps an add'l 30 minutes to the movie would've let the plot develop a little smoother, and allow the lose ends to not seem so hastily closed. On the whole, it was a pretty good use of my $8.50, but not quite the Braveheart of this decade that I had hoped for. :thumb:

DECAPITATIONS

So, lots of that happened. Looked rather "normal", agreed?

Remember when the mutant giant got his head cut off? I'm pretty sure the neck hole looked corrupted, green, and dead -- eventho it had just been cut off.

Am I right? If so, how cool is the attention to detail? I mean, you'd think such a monster would be all jacked up inside.

Well, my film report is there was something for everyone in this film. I notice a gentleman to my left gasp when he saw Leonidas naked rear end, and I was piqued with all the expose tittie as well. And who doesn't like stylized violence?

I did make a bunch of jokes before the film about how 300 is about freedom, despite being ruled by a king. But before the movie started at the IMAX theatre, a manager came out and thanked us for being the 38th straight sellout of 300.

I saw on the History Channel that mutant giants' neck holes, after they are decapitated, will look corrupted, green and dead. Or maybe it was discovery health. Not sure but I know TV said it was normal.

I liked it. There was like 2 minutes of setup and BAM, right into the movie. There were a few slow parts, but I would say 90% of it was good stuff. More movies should lend themselves to my AADD like that.

I will see it again this weekend with the wife.

Apparently 300 IS a fight for freedom:

Iranians Outraged by `300' Movie
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 5:48 p.m. ET

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- The hit American movie ''300'' has angered Iranians who say the Greeks-vs-Persians action flick insults their ancient culture and provokes animosity against Iran.

''Hollywood declares war on Iranians,'' blared a headline in Tuesday's edition of the independent Ayende-No newspaper.

The movie, which raked in $70 million in its opening weekend, is based on a comic-book fantasy version of the battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C., in which a force of 300 Spartans held off a massive Persian army at a mountain pass in Greece for three days.

Even some American reviewers noted the political overtones of the West-against-Iran story line -- and the way Persians are depicted as decadent, sexually flamboyant and evil in contrast to the noble Greeks.

In Iran, the movie hasn't opened and probably never will, given the government's restrictions on Western films, though one paper said bootleg DVDs were already available.

Still, it touched a sensitive nerve. Javad Shamghadri, cultural adviser to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said the United States tries to ''humiliate'' Iran in order to reverse historical reality and ''compensate for its wrongdoings in order to provoke American soldiers and warmongers'' against Iran.

The movie comes at a time of increased tensions between the United States and Iran over the Persian nation's nuclear program and the Iraq war.

But aside from politics, the film was seen as an attack on Persian history, a source of pride for Iranians across the political spectrum, including critics of the current Islamic regime.

State-run television has run several commentaries the past two days calling the film insulting and has brought on Iranian film directors to point out its historical inaccuracies.

''The film depicts Iranians as demons, without culture, feeling or humanity, who think of nothing except attacking other nations and killing people,'' Ayende-No said in its article Tuesday.

''It is a new effort to slander the Iranian people and civilization before world public opinion at a time of increasing American threats against Iran,'' it said.

Iran's biggest circulation newspaper, Hamshahri, said ''300'' is ''serving the policy of the U.S. leadership'' and predicted it will ''prompt a wave of protest in the world. ... Iranians living in the U.S. and Europe will not be indifferent about this obvious insult.''

The whole "anti-Iran" thing is just dumb. I mean there is a very blunt force way of looking at the film that might get you to conclude that it is all about fighting the Iranians, but come on. If you are going to read it alegoricaly, then who really fits the role of the Spartans? Not the US - who would fit the role of the Persians a lot better. Geez, for that matter the thing works better if you just flip it over. The Spartans were the little guys, remember?

I thought the visuals of the film were pretty good. It certainly did not try to be anything other than a live action graphic novel. The blood effects were disappointing. I mean, the stuff splattered everywhere, but never actually landed on anything.

I did get a laugh out of listening to the "new age of freedom" speeches coming from the mouths of Spartans - who were such good soldiers in part because they had to be in order to keep all their slaves in check. But that's history, which had very little to do with this movie.

Go read the original graphic novel. It is better. Then again, go read Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire. It is better still.
