Echo, The Toninator, Deyv, Isa, Heidi, Captain Cogset and Ghostrider met up for 6 days of singeltrack riding, food eating, and beer drinking . A couple people took some dirt samples numerous times as well

Here is part of the group: Captain Cogset, Echo, The Toninator, Deyv, and Isa

I intended our Day 1 ride to be a mere warm up but we ended up riding for almost 5 hours. That's what happens in my world - you just get carried away having so much fun and I forget how far we're going. In my defense, we added on an extra 8 or so miles by riding from my house. Anywho, here we go. Sit back and relax while the craziness ensues.

Deyv tackles the first little tricky section

No pictures were taken on Whoops because no one stopped riding to take one. The flow is just too perfect to interrupt but smiles were pretty wide when we got to the bottom. Grand Slam seemed to be the favorite of the day.

Poor Derek (Captain Cogset) worked that day and met us at Bend Brewing Company after work. We were all enjoying our post ride beers and snacks.

From there we ended up at Deschutes Brewery were hilarity continued

That night was Webcylery movie night so we went and watched Roam and drank more beer.

Day 2

Tuesday was MRT day. MRT is simply the best trail around. It is so much fun and there are different trail characteristics the whole way. I love the little rock sections that challenge even skilled riders, the and the scenery that pries your eyes from the trail.

We all made it alive - junk food time!

Beers that night were at a variety of places and I can't remember what happened

Day 3

Day 3 was our "Day off". We only rode for about 3 hours that day so we could recover a bit...and drink more. We rode up Skyliners Ridge, Sector 16, down upper whoops and down Skyliner Summit in a nice loop.

I rode up the hill behind Tony taunting him about the Alamo and then when I'd frustrated him enough I pulled off a smooth pass to get this.

Wednesday night Derek cooked us burgers and brats before we went out for beers.

Day 4

Oakridge was the plan of attack. We drove out there and began our climb right away. It's about 2 miles flatish to 8 miles full climb. Upon reaching the top Echo exclaimed, "That has to be one of my favorite climbs!" I thought he was being sarcastic but he was dead serious. Next time I'll send him up the singletrack climb instead...it is BRUTAL!

Anyway, the only way to describe the descent is to compare it to a video game where you swoop and dive through space like a fighter pilot. Smiles all around. The 8 mile climb equaled a 6 mile descent and it's insanely fun.

View from the covered bridge in Westfir

We made it home in time for Mexican Food, martinis, and to pick Ghostrider up at the airport.

Day 5

With our newest addition to the family (Ghostrider), we headed for Waldo Lake. There were a few bike casualties this day but we pressed on. Isa was the first to go but with some handy dandy tools, her Racer X was converted to a singlespeed after snapping her hanger off. A mere 50 feet down the trail Deyv got a flat tire and were were turning fearful. Pressed on.

Ghostrider's glasses are fabulous

Dinner was the world's BEST sandwiches.

Day 6

After 5 days averaging somewhere over 4 hours each day of riding, I had saved the hardest for last. Saturday we rode from Skyliners Snowpark up North Fork, up Metolius Windigo, down Flagline, and down South Fork to the start. It is a GRUNT of a climb to Flagline and the loop itself took us somewhere around 5 hours with picture stops.

Flagline and South Fork are two of my favorite trails in Bend. Flat out fast with lots of fun areas.

Enough words.

I have next to no pics of the two descents.

I'm so fast I'm a blur!

Let's see if the video works.

For our last night, we drank like champs. Oh, and they let us play with darts while we drank!

What a completely awesome vacation! Bend is incredible. Over 6 days we probably hit close to 120 miles of singletrack. And these aren't rides you just go find... we had the best trail guides anyone could ever dream of! Every ride, at various points I found myself grinning uncontrollably as we blasted mile after mile of sweet singletrack goodness.

Heidi and Derek are awesome hosts and great new friends. Of course it was awesome to ride in yet another paradise with Deyv and Isa. Toninator kicked my ass almost every climb and still managed to take the obligatory abuse from all of us since he's Texican. And luckily for ghostrider, we saved two killer rides for his two days.

Who knew ogres could ride singlespeed! Calme toi!

There's so much to say about these rides, I can't formulate coherent sentences about it yet. Every ride was my favorite for one reason or another, we tried to decide at the end of the week what the best ride was and it was impossible.

The McKenzie River trail was so epic... through lava fields, over bridges, past crystal clear ponds and waterfalls, the "blue pool", amazing.

Then of course there was Oakridge with its leg crushing fire road climb, rewarded by eye watering downhill for a ridiculous amount of time. I don't have any hills even remotely close to that big around here. Amazing.

Then there was the ride around Waldo Lake with its mind blowing beauty, it's hard to believe that they managed to get 25 miles of perfectly buffed singletrack around the edge of one of the clearest lakes in the US. It was so crazy to go from a green woods with all kinds of ferns and moss everywhere, to all the sudden you're in a desert where the forest burned 3 years ago and is starting to regenerate.

And that last ride, the North Fork-Flag Line-South Fork... unbelievable. Climb for 3+ hours with a scenic overlook of a waterfall and/or mountain peak every friggin' 10 minutes. Then hang on for dear life as you BOMB downhill for about 40 minutes straight, carving perfectly formed singletrack corners, boosting the waterbars, taking alternate lines to hit little features, it was like playing a kickass video game except we were living in it.

Bend owns.

Awesome thread!! Those look like some fantastic trails. I want to ride there.

This thread would be better though if the pictures of Tony were removed.

Awesome write up. I so wish I had my bike when I visited last year.

Someday I'll live out west again and get to ride this stuff.

Those trails look sweet. I'm almost as jealous as Douglas.

The trails, beer, and hospitality were over the top. Heidi and Capt. Cogset were awesome guides and even better hosts. The rest of the gang were great fun to ride with and even better fun to drink with. Unfortunately, now that I'm back at work, reality has come crashing down on me with a painful crunch. Working for a living sucks even worse than I thought it did.

I've got more pics to post later tonight.

That trail name is perfect, when I was riding that trail I was definitely reminded of when I rode in the Alps!
We were slouch though when we hit that trail, we shuttle to the top and just got to do the 16 miles 5000' drop boring part! :brows:

I'm glad you enjoy your trip!

Can't wait to see more pics!!!

Next time you pull a stunt like this, e-mail me and I'll see if I can get away.
Though, even from afar, it's retty cool to get geeked out knowing exactly where some of those shots are taken.

The South Fork descent was *almost* as good as Mrazek in the thundershowers. :happydance: It truly is one of those descents that just keeps on giving.

Still hoping for a late September/early Oct upper trails visit and will let you know.

Killer report, as usual. Glad to hear you finally got some rain.

The best thing about these ride reports is, a month later when you're bummed out at work and wish you were on vacation again, you can look back at the pics and smile :)

Wow, looks like you all had an amazing time. It is nice to see so many smiles on the faces of friends of mine.

I know I'm bumping this like crazy, but I had to say how amazing the trails in Bend look. I'll have to start planning another road trip.
