I'm putting together a bike on a budget and realized that my front chainrings are 8 speed, while the rest of the drivetrain is all 9 speed.

Will there be a compatability problem using the front 8 speed chainrings with a 9 speed chain?

People will probobly say no but they are. The difference is like .2mm.

It will work. The difference between 8 and 9 spd chainrings is how far out the ramps and pins are. The tooth dimensions are the same and the distance between the rings is also the same. It may shift a touch slower or you will notice that you need to shift more forcefully or hold the thumb lever longer or twist the grip shift a bit more. The difference won't be huge though.
