could i use a 9-speed cass with a 8-speed chain and der? i wanna test if my rims r worn too much so i wanna put on a different wheelset. id just do some wheelies, cause thats where the braking is effecting me. itd take a while to do it cause the 9-speed is hanging in the dorm lounge and it has disks also, but id rather get an opinion first

thx

You're right, the derailleur will work, but the gear spacing on a 9-speed cassette is much tighter, ie. 9 gears in the same space that 8 uses.

For testing purposes it's worth a try. Just screwing around in a parking lot, you might find a gear or two that the chain will stay in but most likely not. It does work the other way though (9sp chain on 8sp cassette and der.)
