I have talked to two different shops and they have said that a 9 speed front derailleur doesn't work with 8-speed and visa versa. Are they trying to get a sale or does it really not work?

no way man lol i can't believe a shop told you that. a 9 speed front der. will work w/ 8 speed, and so will a 9 speed rear work w/ a 8 speed cassette. don't listen to your shop they are bull****ing you.
"The Bike Shop" in Calgary would be responsible for that advice. They press you to buy stuff a lot there. I don't think I'm going to be going back there.

I had the exact same problem"answer"from a local bike shop I do alot of business with. Kind of pissed me off too; Considering how much $ I have spent there already over the years. I know the guy has enough experience to know different.
