A couple of newb questions...

Hey guys, I have a couple of simple questions that shouldn't take to long to answer:

1. What are those plastic things on the upper-most stanchions on a dual crown fork? What are they used for? Can you remove them? (The fork I noticed them on was a Marzocchi drop-off triple)

2. If a bike only has two chainrings, and you wish to put three rings on, what is involved? Do you need a new crankset or anything such as that? Can you use the provided two rings and just add one more?

Thanks alot guys.

1. Those are rubber bumpers so that you don't turn the fork too hard and scratch or dent your frame.

2. The bash ring on 2 ring setups is a replacement for the big chainring. You should be able to remove the bashring and install a big chainring without any problems.

Thanks man! Could you remove those bashguards if you so chose? Is there an exception on a TruVativ Hussefelt, ISIS, 22/32/RG, 175 mm? I'm just asking that because that is the crankset I am wondering if it will work for.

yup, take off the bash guard and bolt on a ring. you will need to adjust the front derailleur throw to be able to get the chain up onto it however. right now it probably adjusted so that it does not ramp the chain up onto the bash guard. as for the rubber things leave em there. they protect the fork and the frame during wrecks or when you max out on an x-up when you are jumping.

Cool, thanks. By the way, what do you guys think of the new Giant Faith bikes?
I wanted a specialized big hit bike before, (as some of you may have seen in a former thread of mine) but am now tempted by the Faith 3. I feel I can get a good deal on it from a bike shop. I think it would perform better on the trails and flat land then the big hit would, despite having more travel. But the system is untested as of yet and I will need to see some reviews on the Maestro suspension system. Please voice your thoughs on this issue if you wish!

Ah I'm sure that Mountain bike action will do a test on it pretty soon. Looks pretty sweet though.

mountain bike action is propaganda, they cant ride their way outa a wet paper bag. Id go test ride one at a dealer if u wanted one. There was a thread where some one was talking about them earlier. You could search it, i think it was in this forum. i remember people saying that it was kind of heavy and not really practacle for trail use, i think it was a estimated at around 40 pounds or heavier.
-enjoy the :monkey:

 Simply because it can be done doesn't make it the best tool for the job.

Tharkun, as a couple people have already said, MBA is a pretty mediocre source for facts about a bike... They have lots of great pictures, though, which is about the only reason I pick it up and thumb through it. There's no substitute for a test ride!

mbaction has the most info front to back of any magazine out there. Yes they may be extremely biased to giant and specialized but they always have some great info. the giant thing on their website is straigh up propaganda tho.

Pick up a copy of bike magazine and a copy of mbaction and see how many reviews are in each, its amazing the difference

Not sure if you really meant all this but if so, it's scary.

True, MBA has a lot of information, and they also have a lot of reviews. But quantity does not make up for lack of quality. Not everything they say is wrong and of course everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I get angry every time I read that rag. To me it seems like they basically regurgitate the manufacturer's claims in a lame attempt to keep the advertising dollars coming in. Personally I would rather see LESS reviews of higher quality, with more substance and long-term information.

My Big Hit is down to about 37 pounds. And that's with a Super T, HEAVY tires, and no particularly light parts.

I know the Faith and BigHit FSR are not IDEAL trail or flatland bikes, of course they are not. But I want to abuse it as well, so strength is important. And no one really knows how good the Faith will perform on the trail. I'm not looking to absolutely burn up trails, I'm not trying to set any records. But I have pretty much narrowed it down to those two bikes.

When people see this title they don't think "Oh its a Faith discussion" so I will create a new thread about the Giant Faith for anyone who's interested.
