A fine display by Henning and Rapp

Oct 20, 2009

Rasmus Henning ended his 2010 season with a runner-up spot at the 2010 Ford Ironman Arizona and fellow Specialized Pro Jordan Rapp inspired quite a few folks with his 4th place there. For Jordan though just starting in Arizona was a major victory after being left for dead in a terrible hit-and-run accident in late May of this year.

The day in Tempe, Arizona began with John Dahlz leading out of the Town Lake waters, but Rasmus Henning, Matt Reed, James Bonney, Kevin Everett and Brandon Marsh were quite right there. This group though had managed to gap all other chasers by a few minutes and pre-race favorites such as Timo Bracht, Chris Lieto and defending champion Jordan Rapp were even further back.

Everett, Reed and Henning were soon alone in the lead and held on to the lead until the halfway point of the bike. At that point Jordan Rapp had made up the time lost in the swim and charged into the lead aboard his Specialized Transition. Lieto, Henning and Bracht were right with him and at about the 90 mile marker, Bracht moved into the lead. Reed had already fallen off the pace and soon after Everett and Lieto were gone too. A bit further back Tom Lowe (also known as Chrissie Wellington's boyfriend) rode a somewhat similar pace but had started the bike 5 minutes behind Bracht. Rapp, Bracht and Henning were virtually together coming into the bike-run transition, but Henning had to serve a 4-minute penalty for drafting.

Bracht soon was alone in the lead with Rapp slowly losing contact with the German. Lowe was running super fast and charged past a fading Lieto and by mile 15 managed to pass Rapp too, but Henning looked very good and started to close in on Lowe. By mile 20 Bracht still hung on to the lead with Lowe 80 seconds behind, and Henning another 40 seconds. The fast pace of Lowe started to hurt the Brit and Henning soon after was able to pass him for second place. Bracht found an extra gear at the end and crossed the line first in 8:07:16, Henning finished in second place and Rapp crossed the line in fourth place.

"Thank you for your incredible support and cheers. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you," said an elated Rapp after the race.
