a snakebite is guinness and cider, a black velvet is guinness and champagne. guinness and black(currant) is good as well.

I can't vouch for your naming convention...

At the places I've been a Black Velvet is generally some version of; 1/2 Ace pear cider, 1/2 Guinness. Maybe it's a less spendy variation that's more common than champagne or something.

Ginness is a nice light beer, I rather have something of more substance though.
I agree on the lightness... I tend to not even think of it as beer since my usual brews are stouts and porters.

Speaking of light.. I bought a 6'er of New Belgium Brewing Co's Mothership Wit Organic Wheat Beer on a whim last evening. It's about as colorful as Sprite..

Google results say his convention is the right one.

Prolly..

I just know at the Flying Saucer pubs around the US and at Kelly's Brew Pub in Albuquerque, it's a Black Velvet.

My current favorite brew is Left Hand's Milk Stout right off the nitro tap. These were at O'Niell's in Abq Fri eve.

Had my first Guinness this year and I really like it. I think the can with the plastic bottle in it does a really good job of replication the draft taste. At the moment I am being a cheap bastard and drink this German pilsner which is always to be had for a good price at the local supermarket.

Most of Left Hand's stuff is pretty fantastic. But if you want a dark beer experience, try and hunt down some of Goose Island's Bourbon County Stout. It's like drinking motor oil. 13% abv motor oil. Absolutely amazing stuff...well worth the premium price.

Best two stouts I've had recently are Ale Smith Speedway and Avery Mephistopheles. The Ale Smith is pretty strongly coffee, and super rich and good, and 12% ABV. The Mephistopheles is a little more intense, more bitter, and something like 17% ABV.

Yep. Another vote for both the Avery Meph and the Goose Island.

Holy crap, you get those two in the same room together and it's nighty-night time.

Add in Port Brewing's Older Viscosity Ale (Bourbon aged imperial stout) and you've got mail!!!

Pear cider and Guinness......might as well just announce to the whole bar that you're gay. Mincing little poof voice- "One shandy please"-

However...I will say that when I order a half and half, that's usually how I judge the bar (pub...).

If it's a sh*tty pour, then I do not have to respect them as proper service professionals. End argument. Do not pass Go.

Sounds like something I should look into...especially that Mephistopheles. Where are you finding it, and is it pretty common (I'm going to assume no)?

Had them both in SoCal (I just moved back to NY). Speedway is pretty easy to find there. Mephistopheles, not so much.

Hmmm...that's gonna be trouble. I'm currently in the Beantown, but am moving out to northern MN in a month or so. I can't remember if you can ship booze over state boarders in MN, but I know it's not kosher here in MA.

That Mephistopheles is one awesome beer. Definitely a sipper! Single bottles are pretty easy to find 'round here...they are usually in the "good" beer stores and sell for about $8. It's 16% abv, btw.

If you use it for any variety of black and tan instead of drinking it straight, kick yourself in the balls for me.

What is a Gravity Pour?
It is "Cask ale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Question_book-new.svg" class="image"><img alt="Question book-new.svg" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/99/Question_book-new.svg/50px-Question_book-new.svg.png"@@AMEPARAM@@en/thumb/9/99/Question_book-new.svg/50px-Question_book-new.svg.png", or beer that is naturally carbonated (ie, no force carbonation) and as such can only be poured through either gravity (keg is stored on its side and has a normal twist-tap to dispense beer) or through a beer-engine, which is a pump style tap which draws up beer from the keg in the basement. It's usually served a little warmer than traditional beer (maybe 50deg?), and less carbonated.

Definitely see if there's a place near you that serves it, as its incredibly tasty. Whenever we're at one of the places that does have it, I rarely get anything but (conversation with waitress usually goes like this "so, what do you have on cask?")

The :stupid: smiley is not nearly strong enough for this.
Yeah, and if you ever ride your bicycle on just one wheel, then you should get a unicycle and kick yourself in the balls too... which may be redundant after seating yourself upon said unicycle.

Black velvet is Guinness and champagne everywhere I've seen it.
