Today my girlfriend and I picked up our new puppy! His name is Huck (most people don't get it, but the right one's do). He just turned 7 weeks old, and he's pure lab. We really wanted to adopt, but there just aren't any puppies available in the Tahoe area at shelters. The closest ones we could find were almost 4 hours away and there was already a waiting list. So we were offered a crazy deal on a puppy and here he is! He's truly the cutest thing I've ever seen, I think you might agree.

"It was a funny angle!"
Get ready for constant sh!tting and p!ssing. Also, best thing you can do is get a crate/cage. People will tell you it is cruel but it is the best thing you can do for your dog.

Is this your first dog? At first it will be a little frustrating but in the end, if you take the time to train it, there will be little that can compete with the enjoyment you get out of having a dog.

Start looking for a trainer soon, ask other dog owners in your area where you should go. THe younger you start the better. Also, ask the vet when you can start cutting it's nails. Get it used to the fact that it's nails HAVE to be cut before it grows to be 100 lbs.... I would say let it start getting used to water, but I have never seen a lab that doesn't love water....

great looking dog, congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!

Just don't start using the crate as a crutch for when you don't want to deal with him.

Personally, I and my family have had three dogs, never crate trained any of them (didn't even own a crate, actually), and they were all wonderful, obedient dogs who didn't suffer from any of the issues that crate training is supposed to fix.

My sister got a dog about a year ago and now the dog basically lives in the crate simply because she doesn't want to put up with the disobedience (as a result of little to no training).. It's just a little too easy to banish the dog to the crate when you don't want to deal with him.

My dog's previous owner was guilty of this and the dog is f'ed in the head as a result. Because of how little attention he got before, he developed severe separation anxiety when he moved in with us. We've had him over a year and with lots of patience and retraining he's finally starting to realize that we come back every time we leave.

Crates are only a good thing when used properly.

If it's possible, he's even cuter today than he was yesterday. He's spent a lot of the last few days at the shop with me, and he is doing wonders for business (I start people's rental times when they come in, then they play with the puppy for half an hour before they ride).

We're working on crate training him. He actually naturally took to the area under the desk in our bedroom, and we tried to keep him in there with a baby gate last night, but he cried until we let him sleep in the bed. We're trying to borrow a crate because we're relatively poor (getting a new car too, plus saving for ski passes). No accidents in the house so far, we take him out every 1.5-2 hours and he goes every time, though he did pee in the workroom today...
