I think It should just be sport- expert- pro.. I agree that they should move up, i think once they place top 5 for 2 races.. sport gets a plaque or medal and expert gets swag and at small races maybe cash.. Pros do deserve cash.. Norba is a bunch a bandits.. We spend some bank at these races.. The fees have to be structured as well.$20 sport and up..
We should do away w/ semi pro.. Most of those guys are fast enough to be pro anyways..
Same as BMX 3 top 5's Beg HAS TO move into Sport 10 top 5's HAS TO move into Expert 10 top 5's HAS TO move into Semi. Then it becomes a money thing. Make over $1000 and your Pro.
The fact is most expert riders are pretty serious about what they are doing. They are very competitive, most sport riders are not. This can lead to all sorts of difficulties, like people being held up by a sport rider out for a sunday ride.
Having a sport/beginner class also allows you to have a different course for people who are not as skilled, and dont care to be as skilled. They just want to get out, ride bikes and have fun with their buddies on a course they will not be scared to ride. Let's be honest here, a lot of pro/expert courses make some pros nervous at first glance...imagine what this would do to an uninitiated sport rider. It could turn them away from the sport if all they here about is big drops, gnarly rock gardens (a la yardsale/durango 3rd drop etc).
Not everyone is retarded competitive, we need to have a class for these folks.
Hint: Exclusion is not a good way to be succesful in this.
Pegboy and piper, you guys are way off the back here. Look at how many Beg/Sport riders are registered at a National then multiply by $45. Riders at that level FAR outweigh Ex/Pro. If you cut out recreational racers (guys with kids your age) you are cutting out a HUUUGE group of people with HUUUUGE amounts of discretionary income.
An over 35 rider spends way more on a race weekend than some 19yr old hotshoe.
The organization is still in concept faze and you guys are already trying to alienate riders. Elitism will get you nowhere. A good race needs to be fun for everyone. I agree that the age group splits are a bit ridiculous, 10 year splits would be more appropriate, but if you mash everyone into just a few class's what would it accomplish? Other than longer awards ceremonies and wasted ink on results sheets, having more classes is really hurting anyone as far as I can tell. Even people that arent very competitive are still going to get frustrated if they have no hope of ever winning in their class. Consolidating beginner and sport might work, as a win in begginer is truly meaningless, you would just have to make sure the faster sport/beg went first some how.
I know the class brakedown is fine the way it is. A perfect example is when Northstar posted on their web site that the course was not suitable for beginners. My numbers fell way off at the next two races. I went from 175 to under 100 because somebody in marketing who rides XC thought the course was too dangerous for beginner riders. Yeah beginner riders... not beginner DH racers. The damage was done and I NEVER got most of those racers back. The only change should be that once you top 5 at so many races you have to move up. Something NORBA used to enforce, but for some reason quit doing. Remember we are trying to fix what's wrong not open a new can of worms. The issues are: NATIONALS poor quality for what you pay, high pit prices, no pro payout, AM seeding, rankings, and the lack of a good show. Make EVERYONE feel like they are as important as the other guy. From Beginner to Pro. I also think it's funny to hear some of you AM's wanting to get paid. As far as I know you can't do that I'M NOT SURE. I will be RESEARCHING that. The people that started this are doing THE RESEARCH day and night (at least I know I am.) We love the feed back that we have got so far. Thanks everyone!!!!
P.S. Because alot of the beg/spt classes don't get the min # of riders many get move into the next age group anyway.
Ametuers should not get cash payout.
Swag is one thing (geez remember swag? I loved swag!) but cash has no place on a non-pro podium.
If someone wants to get paid to race they should make the commitment needed to race pro. It will do nothing but increase sandbagging in the lower classes.
Besides, getting a cash payout would eliminate you from Master's worlds.
Did not read entire thread so sorry if the following was already mentioned:
The age classes would be very discouraging the the middle-aged sport racers
who have money to burn and a strong desire to bring a piece of tin home on sunday (or at least stand a reasonable chance).
I think once you get past 18 yrs old the age groups should be by 5 year gaps...nothing wrong with that...I have no desire to race against some young 19 year old punk :eviltongu

Heres my suggestion. Take your time. As you might have learned in school, if you rush to finish a project on time it will turn out like crap. BCD, those look like good goals for mammoth, at the least we need to distribute flyers with phone numbers, people can sign up for mailing lists, ect. And if the mammoth race turns our horrible, it will only help our cause
Just to throw something out here...Why not call your classes Beginnner, C, B, A and AA and have Vet, Open and Jr. Classes of each of those except AA and Beginner. Just like in MotoX. That way no one has to ride in the demeaning "sport" category. Just sounds better IMO.
The "coffin" jumps are tabletop jumps dug out of the ground. They kind of look like empty graves I guess. They're built like sh!t. The first one is big, the middle two are a little smaller and the last one is miniscule with no landing if you hit it right (braking like a biotch right before it) or an uphill landing if you don't hit the brakes. That's where I broke my ankle.
The lower section of the course has a log ride (log jump if racing) several little doubles which are pretty fun, a pretty big rock slab to ride down into deep pumice sand and some berms which will be completely destroyed by race day. Riding it fast will definitely separate the skill levels that show up much more so than any standard dh course.
at least its new some stuff you are right, mammoth has never sucked
