Not quite 6 million dollars, more like the cost of an average DH bike - I had elective all laser Lasik surgery. Nice they they have 6 month, zero interest financing.

First they give you valium to calm you down, 10-20mg, (15 mg in my case) and wait a few minutes for it to kick in (didn't seem to do much for me except make me sleepy). Then they place a vacuum held device over your eye to keep it open. Next a corneal flap is made with a femtosecond laser over the course of about one minute and then they fold the flap back. Afterwards a VISX S4 (4th generation) eximer laser is used to reshape your eye over the course of a minute using a custom wavemap of your eye in combination with 3D eyetracking (developed originally for astronomy) so it cuts with your eye movement/stays in the right area and also variable spot scanning is used so it can adapt to various sized pupils. Finally they fold the corneal flap back and put a clear contact lens like bandaid on you eye.

Got it done last night and I can already see better but still have to heal up some obviously. They took the bandaids off this morning. I think the red spots are from broken blood vessels caused by the vacuum rings.

No mountain biking until Monday - good thing its a holiday.

Ha, you LASIK pvssy...I had a PRK, in which they don't slice the epithelium off the eye and replace it after...they blast the sucker off with a bright purple laser, and the wound is basically exposed until it all grows back. On the plus side, though, there are zero concerns with flap migration post-op.

The worst part, though, was being under the laser and realizing the grinning guy behind the controls was in fact a military doctor...who I couldn't sue for malpractice, and had for some reason stayed in the military to make a pittance of money relative to what he could be making on the outside... Made me wonder...and suddenly wish I'd sprung for the expensive, experienced civilian docs in LA...

However, when you're under the laser, all clockwork-orange'd up, there's not much you can do! Luckily my left eye came out a tad better than 20/20, and my right about 20/40. Big change from not being able to read my wristwatch at arm's length without glasses.

Well, I'm in, temporarily. They're gonna pull it out in 4 months or so.
Before:

After:

I'm pretty impressed that they actually got it straight through the center like that.

Ti bolts and dead guy parts in my knee.

I've always liked to make that bionic sound whenever I try to do something really physical in slow motion....now I can do it with pride.
