Rotational weight is a pretty thin argument, though a DuraAce cassette is lighter (and cheaper) than XTR. Where I'm originally from (Michigan) a LOT of us do this to get tighter gear ratios- the jump from one gear to another isn't very big so you can always find an ideal cadence. This limits your ability to get into very low gears quickly, however, and can be a problem on courses with lots of climbing. Running a 2x9 with a 12-27 DA cassette leaves you with a 32-27 low gear. There's a lot of races where that works, but a lot more where it will work you over. I'd say, short track specific bikes, cross bikes, and flattttt races- yes, everything else, no.
