BTW, the only way to capture lightning is to set your camera on a tripod and open the shutter until it strickes.

By the time you see it and hit the shutter, it will always be too late.

How does setting your camera to bulb work? I mean, I understand how to make the camera do it but it seems like it would overexpose the picture? Do you step the aperture way down to let in less light?

Yup. Same technique is used for catching fireworks. It helps if the shutter has a remote trigger so the camera doesn't shake.
