So last night I'm on my road bike for a nice long after work jaunt through the countryside when I see up ahead a cyclist loaded down with panniers. I catch up and its a lady! She's loaded down with front and back bags, movin pretty slowly. I slow down and spin next to her. She's headed to Florida! She started a couple weeks ago in San Francisco and expects that it will take her at least 2 more months to get to Florida.

Wow, what an adventure!

Anyone else have a summer adventure planned?

Florida? Wow, that's endurace, I'm not core enough to do taht.

Bend, eh? I've heard the riding's incredible, but wet. I'm sure you guys are going to love it.

I don't have any travels plans set this year, well except for a couple more Vegas trips. So far my plan is to save up what vacation I've got and hopefully make a trip to South America (Ecuador and Peru) sometime next year.

It really isn't that wet. Average rainfall per year is about 12".

South America would be cool! I still want to hit Bolivia.

 awesome!

nothing specific here... just several long weekend trips into the various mountains. Just bought a pair of hiking boots cuz my friends have been bugging me that I didn't hike with 'em at all last summer.

Gonna do my first metric century next weekend, first century a couple weeks after that, then the Triple Bypass.

Cool, one more person to join us in the bitching and moaning during the winter months! :)

No "adventures" planned for me. Lots of little things going on, but no single huge event.

I used to work at a deli on a back road in the country in upstate NY. It was a road bikers on long rides would take to head to New England. In any event 2 older guys came rolling up loaded down with all kinds of equip much like the woman in your story.
They ordered some deli sandwitches and ate. I chatted a bit and found out they rode up from south carolina. So we talked and they got ready to leave and I went back in to work. The one guy comes running in and goes "I almost forgot, 2 packs of Palmal unfilters please."

WTF... I still remember that..... crazy southerners....

I don't think I'll bitch and moan about anything when I live there. I'm following my dream. I'll just take up snow sports!

Back on topic, I had read in the Readers Digest one time, one guy went around the world walking by always following the equator.. got into all sorts of troubles, feared for his life more than once... I think he was gone three years or something, one heck of an adventure!

I think Mt Hood is near you and I think they ski/board year round up there. While you won't want to, i'm guessing that means they have awesome winter conditions?

I hear OR is awesome.

Correct, Bend is on the east side of the Cascades, it's more high desert'ish.

Mt. Hood is about 2 hours away, but Mt. Bachelor is about 20 minutes outside of town and has some pretty good skiing.

The best LBS in town is Hutch's, as for Alex (not sure which store the east or west one), but he rocks. Paul Thomasberg and company also live there if I'm not mistaken, and if you keep a sharp eye if you see them riding chances are you'll see some prototype Shimano stuff.

I got so excited about posting about Bend I totally spaced the topic of this thread: summer adventures.

It's not bike related (yet) but my wife and I will be having our first child (boy) around the middle of June...........this should be a lifetime adventure.

Have you read Barbara Savage's "Miles From Nowhere: An Around-the-World Bicycle Adventure"? (I know the first part of the title is correct; not sure about the rest.) It's amazing. Joe Kurmaski also has written a book about truckin' across the U.S. by bike... good stuff, both of those, if you want to hear some of the details about doing something like riding across a country by bike.

Peru rules. I was there about 2 years ago, and REALLY, REALLY want to go back with a bike. Someday, after Iceland maybe.
This summer I'm hoping to get back up to Santa Cruz, the riding there kicks major ass.
Bend eh Heidi? That's awesome! OR riding kicks ass, that's high on my "to ride" list too...

We should have a western coast style monkey fest in Oregon somewhere. i'd be down, but only if Serial Midget goes, he's a good luck charm, and i've never had good luck when i've gone to Oregon....

Adventure? i was thinking of doing a forest road ride in the Cascade range. Get a fatty pack and enough goodies to spend a few nights and ride from pass to pass. but it's on the backburner, my micro adventure epics are pretty good, especially when i do em alone.
Oh yah and actually i want to ride into a ghost town in the mountains too, gotta find out more info on that. It's just down the other side of this ridge that i ride on anyways....... spooky cool deserted railroad for logging town.... wooooOOOOooooh!

The only adventuring I'll be doing is exploring the corn / sunflower fields this summer. That, and competing in, (and winning by the way) my first and only "race" (Clicky)

Well, it looks like my whole summer will sort of be an adventure.

I got a job through the Student Conservation Association. No solid info yet but I have a general idea about it and got a verbal committment from them.

About a week after classes and exams are over, I have to drive to Idaho (2400 miles). Work doing some surveying/mapping there, living probably in fairly isolated conditions: in a national forest, no electricity etc. I'll be done at the end of August and will then drive back to NJ.

Avoiding the nine to five
Going to Australia in July for a semester abroad. Afterwards I'll be spending a week or more in New Zealand, backpacking and rock climbing(this will be in December, but that is their summer).

I'm also planning a camp out at some dirt jumps over the summer, 2 or 3 days with buddies, music, and film just hitting up and building dirt jumps. If it goes through it should be a blast!
