Like when Clint Eastwood had his very enlightening conversation with an empty chair? There is a piece in the NYT today by Thomas Friedman (advocate for all your recent wars if I may remind you) where he imagines conversations with world leaders about Afghanistan, and comes to his own conclusions about what is right based on these imagined conversations.
In the comments many people are praising this as being the most insightful thing they’ve read on the subject, including one who goes as far as saying Friedman is ‘the only voice of reality’.
I can’t even….
Mostly that places like the new york times will pay them for writing them. What, exactly, are these performance pieces supposed to prove beside that the preformer loves the sound of their own bullshit?
Two whole years? Yeah right. Can’t claim credit for this but I lol’d:
1989: USSR pulls out of Afghanistan
1991: USSR collapses
2021: USA pulls out of Afghanistan
2023:
"I was there. Afghans did not reject us. They looked to us as exemplars of democracy and the rule of law. They thought that’s what we stood for.The Ides of August
August 15, 2021I’ve been silent for a while. I’ve been silent about Afghanistan for longer. But too many things are going unsaid. I won’t try to evoke the emotions, somehow both swirling and yet leaden: the grief, the anger, the sense of futility. Instead, as so often before, I will use my mind...www.sarahchayes.org
Is that Americandemocracycapitalism?
Well…?"
Yea...that sounds exactly like our Americandemocracycapitalism. #cynicalme
Otherwise, great read.
I'll see your Brian and raise you a Woo.It's awfully nice to have Brain on Ignore. His drivel doesn't even show up in the thread... except on the rare occasion that someone quotes him. And even then it just shows up as "You are ignoring content by this member."
Missin some serious dick pics. And lots of stuff I post that you post like 4 days later.I'll see your Brian and raise you a Woo.

Sure would be nice if that kind of a approach would apply to the border detention joints. Also full of refugees from countries we fucked up.Was at a temporary housing facility today. Although it is nowhere near ideal, I saw kids playing soccer, laughing and having fun. They are fed, safe and warm, getting to do what they are supposed to be doing.
Good things are happening.
I get it, I only report what I see personally. I can’t fathom what is going on in the other areas…Sure would be nice if that kind of a approach would apply to the border detention joints. Also full of refugees from countries we fucked up.
Funny what a little concentrated news coverage will getcha
Somewhat predictable. Attack helicopters and drones sound perfect for stopping individual suicide bombers in a crowd…US troops, Afghans killed in attacks outside Kabul airport
Thirteen US service members and at least 60 Afghans have been killed in two bombing attacks outside Kabul's airport, according to the Pentagon and Afghanistan's Ministry of Public Health.www.cnn.com

pay wall.....essy pass....A useful article in the NYT for a change:
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/26/opinion/afghanistan-us-withdrawal.html
In 2005, two of my colleagues at The American Prospect, Sam Rosenfeld and Matt Yglesias, wrote an essay I think about often. It was called “The Incompetence Dodge,” and it argued that American policymakers and pundits routinely try to rescue the reputation of bad ideas by attributing their failure to poor execution. At the time, they were writing about the liberal hawks who were blaming the catastrophe of the Iraq war on the Bush administration’s maladministration rather than rethinking the enterprise in its totality. But the same dynamic suffuses the recriminations over the Afghanistan withdrawal.pay wall.....essy pass....
