There are a lot of points to be made.

While I enjoy reading about Special Forces, discussions with local San Franciscans have been amusing, either about the unnecessary violence or that soldiers should have killed themselves to take OBL.

But I think Seal Team 6 did a great job, if they killed unarmed participants, well, they should have armed themselves.

We didn't want to take him alive and go through the whole trial process (and the possibility that he would go free). My guess is the SF had shoot-to-kill orders, but that's just a hunch.

Oh San Fran....

This isn't a police brutality case, it's war. If he's not waving a white flag face down on the ground with both his hands showing while surrendering in English then they had every right to shoot.

Do you want those Seals to stand around hoping no one is going to go all suicide bomber on them?

Actually, a couple of friends argued last night it had to be done, that this was the exception to the rule of law, and I played devil's advocate and said we should try to follow our laws, not ignore them even in this case; otherwise, then you make exceptions all the time.

It's a bit like the National debt ceiling really..... f*cked if you do, f*cked if you don't.

I also feel that "Rule of law" has had such scant lip service given to it for so long that it is a slightly farcical line to take in security matters or international relations. To me for a while now "Rule of law" has been subverted by "Lord of the flies" in the so called war on terror. :(

Are you implying that civilian law should apply to war?

He was a known enemy combatant not a US citizen.

If we are talking about "law" in a war zone then we need to go consult the Geneva convention.

We've already crossed that bridge with the guy in Yemen.

Give it 10 years, and President Jeb Bush will have special forces putting bullets in Assange's head in Finland or wherever else. 30 years down the road President Bristol Palin will be sending kill teams after anyone who says something mean about her bitch of a mother...

So didn't we say sometime back that we would consider a country found to be harboring terrorists a terrorist nation and consider ourselves at war with them?

So we invade Pakistan next, huh? Oh wait...

Well, they could have justifiably dropped a JDAM or shot a few hellfires into the place instead. That's a pretty common way to kill people these days, targeted assassinations included. So, the Seals don't seem so bad.

Turn it back to cool stuff, I'm sure Seal Team 6 was using M-4's, but I didn't know much about the MP7:

I have read about the MP5, but I see there is a need for more powerful bullets to defeat body armor.

anyone catch the wknd chock-full-of-i-toldyaso?

Cheney defending his record: "We went to a lot of trouble to find out what we could do, how far we could go, what was legal and so forth. Out of that emerged what we called enhanced interrogation. It worked. It provided some absolutely vital pieces of intelligence. There is a study that was done by the CIA in the National Archives, some of it has been declassified now, that shows that enhanced interrogation of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed provided a vast treasure trove if you will of intelligence. It was a good program. It was a legal program. It was not torture. I would strongly recommend we continue it.” Barack is now in the unique position of taking credit for a victory that wouldn't have happened without policies he has condemned. As TheDC's Jim Treacher notes: "Pouring water on a terrorist’s face goes against our core values as Americans. You gotta break into his house and shoot him in the eyes."

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani also expressed confidence in Pakistan's military and Inter-Services Intelligence agency, which have been heavily criticized for failing to confront the U.S. Navy SEALs who conducted last week's helicopter raid without notifying Pakistan first.
Would you be quick to confront them?
