Changing the oil in my 888s for the first time, put the spanners on the jam nut and top cap, applied force to unscrew and, snap, the rod snaps off above the jam nut.

So having not stripped a 888 down before do i need an entire new compression cart or can the rod just be replaced?

Yup. Couple threads on MTBR about this - actually, one that guy a guy banned from the board, since he flipped his lid and started screaming, swearing, and threatening people's lives :D

Well, you were lucky they did so and not everyone who has done this has been so lucky.

Good news, though, maybe wysiwyg won't be out the big bucks after all!

Not that expensive here. I had the same thing happen to me, picked a comp cartridge for 80 bucks new Canadian! The 888 cartridges are super sheap unless you upgrade to a newer comp cartridge. A little fix next time guys, heat the sucker up before you try to un-do it.

See if you can screw it back together using the red nut half way over were it broke and the top cap all against itself like. I did it only thing the top cap sits a little higher now on the rod so when you unscrew the comp dial it pulls away from the rod inside before you you reach all back.
And it "seems" it only unsrews again when I remove the top cap.

I would also try GO-RIDE since they are doing the BOS cartridges the may have stock ones to get rid of or do the BOS.
