Ahh the joys of a fresh computer (Mac)

My work has upgraded my computer bigtime. I'm a cartographer in an all mac (almost) office and had a G4 866 (single) on OS9.

Now I'm on a G4 dual 866 with 1.25 gigs of RAM
with OSX and all the new grapics software to boot

OSX has been pretty good to me so far, a little weird finding files and having permission prompts on files, but it hasn't crashed at all. My last computer had odd graphics refresh issues, memory leaks and crashes, so that is a HUGE improvment.

And Illustrator 10 is bad ass! New tools, nested layers, good stuff!

I'm a computer dork and thought I'd share my joy :)

Hah! I wish! That would actually be overkill for what I do most of the time, but I wouldn't say no either

I got a "new" comp - my work sold off all the "old" systems when all were replaced by brand new ones.

I picked up this:

AMD Athlon 2200+
Asus A7N8X
768 megs DDR 266 ram
ATI 7500 card (doomed to be replaced SOON)
60g IBM Deskstar hard drive

I then added:

New case - black Cheiftec Dragon from Comp USA - $10 floor demo model (1 small scratch on it)
Another 40g Deskstar - free from a friend
52x32x52 CDRW - from my other comp
AverTV capture card - - from my other comp
Thermalright SLK-900(A) heatsink w/ a 92mm high speed fan (on it's way in UPS today)
2 cheesy red 80mm LED fans ( :thumb: )
New rounded IDE cables
New mouse

I should be able to overclock this over 2000 mhz

All told? About $320. Lot's of room to grow in there too.

:p

It's this one, but all black...

These are going for $20 brand new at Comp USA right now. They're sold as Comp USA brand.

My brothers new dual 2.5ghz G5 just shipped out... he has only been at his job 6 months and got a dual 2 ghz G5 when he started and now getting this new one.... and in between they got him a 17 inch powerbook maxed out with everything for him to work on at home. The bad news..... I turned down the job and helped him get it. Please kill me.

I'm waiting on a BTO dual 2.5 ghz machine, essentially maxed out. The delays have been tough though, and I likely will not get mine until next month.

This is one fast liquid-cooled mother.....and it's all built for one thing........

Oh, and scientific research & data analysis.

How much is that thing?

Below is the most basic G5 2x2.5ghz I could come up with off the apple site:

Items you have selected Part No. Est Ship Qty Unit Price Ext. Price
Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5GHz Z0AC 4-6 weeks Remove $3,449.00 $3,449.00
56k V.92 modem 065-5168
Accessory kit 065-4894
Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) 065-4984
1GB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 2x512 065-4976
Apple Keyboard & Apple Mouse - U.S. English 065-4923
Mac OS X - U.S. English 065-4897
ATI Radeon 9800 XT w/256MB DDR SDRAM 065-4893
250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm 065-4982
Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 065-4803

Plus its overclocked, thats why they had to use watercooling

Opteron Runs at 2.4 GHz w/air cooling while the G5 runs at 2 GHz w/air cooling. Apple claimed they would hit 3GHz a little over a year ago by this summer - stupid stupid Steve-O - talk to your EE before you open your big mouth :nope:

Yeah its not like they havent taken heat sink/fan cooling to its max with the G5s... the whole damn thing is a giant vent, and even the singles have 3 monster fans that are individually controlled. We will have liquid cooled mac's... its only a matter of time.

Any AMD system can be effectively liquid cooled and o'clocked for $99. A really nice system could be built for around $2k

Something to think about anyway.

Of course, all of the best creative software is on Mac though, right?

This means for 3400 bucks your getting an inferior machine.
Maybe an inferior OS, but a FASTER and more customizable machine.

And Linux is free.

A single Athlon 64 FX-53 will smoke any G5 dual. Kinda sad really.
