It is not the most expedient method but for every PM you receive, you get a new strain of herpes.
For some things you can get email alerts. Under Preferences you can choose to receive email notifications for watched threads/media. Under Contact Details you can receive email notifications for PMs.
I can probably easily implement a plugin for another specific type of notification if anyone else finds it to be a desirable feature... which notification were you looking for?
